Rear locker swap from non locker, how do you wire it up?

So I’m going to replace my stock non locker 97 axle with a 2000 locker axle.

I don’t want to run the locker through the ECU and I don’t have any harness because the truck originally did not have the locker

I want to run a separate switch to engage and disengage,

is there an aftermarket harness with a switch to do this some where or a how to do link?

or is there a specific company that makes them for the 1st gen?
That work well?
Anyone using the low range kit?
Does it work for the 1st gens?

 

Low Range kit works great. Nice harness.

 

You should have went with an Eaton E locker instead.

 

I had to replace the rear axle because the input shaft bearings started to shread metal everywhere inside so killing two birds with one stone

It's just connecting the harness to the locker, and adding power and ground.

 

No but i've used them before. It comes with basic instructions. Just need a power and a ground source. Also A dash light power wire.

Ok, great, does the low range light fit directly into the dash size wise where the original switch is?
Or can the original switch be used?

 

I'm sure you know this, but just want to put it out there, make sure you match your gearing to your front diff.

 

Yup, both are 410,
I think all the lockers were 410 too

 

The original switch wont work. With a little filing on orginal hole for locker switch the lowrange one will fit in the hole. But when it fits in the hole it's recessed a little. The travel for the rocker switch wont move far enough to make switch work. I've installed about 10 of their switches and harnesses. What I do is pop the rocker part off with little screw driver and file the angle a little sharper by rubbing it on a flat file

Some 4runners had 4:30 elockers also.

Make your own harness with a DPDT switch, very easy.

 

If you have done ten of these did you have to get a different brake cable and hardware?

As long as it's in the unlocked postion you can run it without being wired up. The motor can be jump with a few wires and a battery to move it to unlock position.

All the ones I did had all the brake hardware and cables on them. It was an unhook and rehook new cable up.

If it's not a momentary on DPDT it will burn up the motor. You can buy the correct switch from lowrange. Making your own harness wont be near as clean and factory looking as buying lowrange harness.

 

you’re correct. As long as you wire in the limit switches it can be a maintained. I guess it’s a time/money thing. If I can make something that performs the same function why pay for it. I don’t know what you mean by clean looking, all you end up seeing is the switch on the dash so as long as you don’t goober the hole up where it mounts that’s all there is to it.

 

just make sure everything works before installing.

It makes any repair work much easier.
