Has anyone ever installed a rear locker to a non TRD prerunner?
I have a 2012 DCSB looking to get that locking rear end or LSD? Some input on the pros and cons would be great. Thank you

    Pros would be better traction.

Cons will be less money in your wallet.
And a slightly smaller ring gear.

I've read that some guys buy complete rear ends off a crashed tacoma and install on their prerunner.

You can swap the entire axle from an Offroad on to the Sport. They both have 3.73 gearing and can usually be found at a wreckers for $800-$1,000 with low mileage. Install is stringent forward as well.

I think this is the best option as it does not have all of the electronic nanny stuff telling you when and when you can't engage. There is possibly more complexity with airlines and air pumps and such but they are reasonably robust. Had front and rear on a 1/2 ton chevy several years ago and it was bullet proof. Was also nice to have on-board air.

That's pretty much my reasoning as well. I enjoy air on board with or without a locker. So eventually I will tackle that project.

yep, just a different housing size due to the e-locker.

you can swap either axle either way, if you find a good deal on a trd o/r rear axle, just swap it in. It's cheaper than pulling your 3rd and buying an ARB ($1100) and installing a compressor, running plumbing and fixing leaks .. also if you aren't too mechanically inclined you should have a shop install the ARB

I would think the air lines might be easier than the electrics needed for the elocker?

Edit: as far as the gears themselves, yes, a whole axle would be easier than rebuilding a 3rd member.

But even if you add a locker, it's still only 2wd.

    Why spend the money?

I don't understand the mentality of prerunners being inferior on TW. Someone always has to point out that someone has 2wd. It's possible that some people buy a prerunner because they will never need 4wd. Who cares. It's still a Tacoma.

My last 3 trucks were 4x4. I never used it. Therefore I chose 2wd this time and love it. Nice and light, not been stuck yet.

Oh yeah, it was 24k otd brand new.

    Well son of a...

I always assumed it was larger since it's commonly referred to as an "8.4" :tinfoilhat:

Aren't the bearings larger or something?

Really? I know a few guys who have done this swap and have said it is straight forward. If you do your research and prep work most things are straight forward though.

I'm not saying it's hard or impossible. It's just not AS simple as bolting in an axle. There are plenty of writeups explaining how to do the wiring and also aftermarket harnesses available.
It also depends on if you want it to work like it does from the factory and disable ABS/trac or if you just want an independent switch for it.
