So I have a 08 tacoma sr5 been wanting to install a rear lockers. My truck has LSD and its useless offroading. I found a 05 tacoma at the junk that has a E lockers. Would it be possible to take that whole rear axles and wiring swap it on to my truck. Im pretty sure my cousin can figure out the wiring and I can install the rear my self and the guy at the junk said it would bolt right in. Its sounds too easy is there anything u have to do or worry about???

Would you know what gear ratio my truck is. I heard you can find it on the door jam but the letters and numbers doesn't make sense to me. Lol20200901_211838.jpg

A04C means you have 3.73 with a limited slip.

If you're looking for a budget solution, check out lunchbox lockers. They can be clunky and loud on pavement around turns, but it's just how they're designed and is normal. They're not for everyone, but I love mine. The main benefits are inexpensive, can be installed in a driveway with no special tools, and reliable, meaning no electronics or air hoses to fail.

edit: After a quick search, a lunchbox locker will not work in an LSD carrier. You would have to get a carrier from an open diff, and that would negate the whole "Not needing any special tools". Unless you got a completely assembled 3rd diff from someone.

See my edit above. I just learned that lunchbox lockers won't work in an LSD carrier.

If you have the 8" diff you only need the 3rd member w/ elocker from the junkyard truck. Even easier. If that's your axle code, A04C, then you have the 8" axle and that's what the elocker will be too.

No, you cannot just take a 3rd member from an e-locker axle and plop it in the non e-locker axle. There are minor differences between the housings where the diff itself mounts.

On the 1st gen tacomas/3rd gen 4runners I've seen it done. I don't know of anyone who's done it on a newer truck though.

Unfortunately the tags are not accurate. My 2011 Off Road clearly has an E-Locker but the tag says A04C.

So it has the same code but a different gear ratio between the trd with e lockers and my sr5 with LSD.

Ok so if I remove my stock rear with no E lockers and swap it out with the 05 tacoma that has E lockers would work with out doing any re gearing because there the same gearing I just have to do all the wiring.

Love the lsd. Don’t go off road much anymore. I think 90% of truck that have lockers where I’m at would be much better off w/lsd especially Winter driving. Had locker on my Titan and used it about 5 times. Could have achieved same results w/traction ramps.

preaching over. Lockers probably necessity for some.
