The rear diff locker is only for use up to 5 mph, and the manual advises the user to disengage it once you are on your way from being stuck or out of the adverse condition that required its use in the first place. It is a major subsystem though and to add it in later adds some considerable cost and would more than likely void a drivetrain warranty, so it should be a consideration if its a system you want.

so there isnt any sand then?

like i said come to az in the washes, you will get stuck. go to the dunes in california and you WILL get stuck. unless your 4wd and stay on flat ground.

I drove a BMW before I got my Tacoma, they are decent in the snow with good snow tires, horrible without them.

The thing that makes them decent in the snow is the weight dsitribution is exactly 50/50 between the front and rear, where as I would imagine the front end is a lot heavier on a Tacoma compared to the rear.

Not sure why people repeat that false statement . Locking and unlocking has to be performed under 5MPH because more speed would strip splines on that thing. Once its locked you can break sound barrier if you want to. ;)

Here in Florida we have sugar sand, very dry, without 4X4 you can get stuck very easy, and the more you try to get out, the deeper you get.

My locking dif doesn't seem to engage. It's like there is a magical formulaand the moons must align for it to engage. It's a brand newand idk why it won't engage.

i did and it doesnt say.. :/ it has engaged twice since i bought the truck but i didnt do anything different from what i was trying today. im thinking i need to go to the dealer and have them look at it. i can hear the relay when i push the button and a noise that sounds like it engaging but the light on the dash keeps blinking and thats means it hasnt engage or there is an issue and i dont think there should be any issues it brand new.

David K inadvertently started that rumor. Even with the aftermarket ARB air actuated locker you must engage/disengage it under 5 mph or you'll tear splines out. as stated above once you're locked you can roll out as fast you safely can

I was in cali this weekend and had to pull an old Ford F-150 out of the sand. He had no tread (and I mean slick bald almost) and got stuck.. Turned on the locker, pulled him out, no problems.

and I'm from AZ too and see all sorts of trucks that are 4x4 stuck in the sand.

rear locker in snow = fishtail and the rear of your truck is now the front of your truck... I lived in idaho and we had plenty of snow and my 2wd got around fine:D I even went up the mountains a couple times for snowboarding trips. thats with a base model prerunner, no chains, with nitto dune grapplers, and an easy foot.

No I did not... lets not make stuff up, there is already enough bullsh*t on TW without adding more.

If you have an OFF ROAD TRD, this is on the door:

    1-26-11005_89646d330ba663ef03e57ed170e65aba6fad7945.jpg

It is the same sticker that was on my 2001, my 2005 and my 2010 Tacoma. So, while some claim it is a mis-print, Toyota had over 10 years to change it... and they didn't.

The locker is for use when all else fails... and to be turned off when you are no longer stuck... PER TOYOTA.

I know it will work as fast as you can drive in Low Range... (which isn't real fast)... but if you can drive at all, then there is no 'need' for the rear to be locked together. The 4WDs can only activate the locker in Low Range (unless they do a mod.) The non-4WD Off Roads don't have Low Range, so their locker works in any gear.

    balony David K...

it has been pointed out to you, by many other people and proven that where it states "Operate DIFF LOCK at speeds under 5mph (8 km/h)" is a mistake on Toyota's behalf as a misinterpretation of words between the Japanese and English languages. why they chose not to address and correct that mistake is beyond you and i.

anyways..i have to ask. why are you so keen to always point this out. like it's going to be the end of the world..or the whole truck is going to explode if you go over 5mph while locked? give one example of this happening, that the rear end failed while driving at speeds greater than 5mph. and no, a failed ring and pinion does not count.

    To me this means:

"Don't push the button if you're going faster than 5mph"

    that is all.

    speaking of videos..

and who say's you can't turn while locked..i was already fully locked front/rear as i came into frame at .35 seconds. notice how my buddies crawler before me had trouble going up and how easily i made it up. then notice my buddy Crazy Karl and his red ATRAC equipped truck floundering at the bottom hahhaha

I for one have no experience with the locker (my OR is only a week old!), but I do have lots of experience dealing with Japanese to English translations- worked for a Japanese robotics corp for several years.

The word "OPERATE", translated from Japanese, could very well mean "ACTUATE", and in fact probably does. Seems like lots of people use their factory locker above 5mph with no problems? :)
