2017 truck, 2wd, auto, V-6, 90,000 miles, basically passenger use.
The rear main seal is leaking (new PCV clean lines etc... it's the seal!)
Anyone else have this problem? Any chance Toyota will come to the rescue? I've have 8 other Toyotas most over 200,000 miles and never a basic problem like this. This is not typical Taco stuff!
    Am I missing something?
    thx!IMG_2818.jpg

No, Toyota typically only does goodwill for a max of 1 year or 10,000 miles over. Drivetrain is 5 year 60,000 miles.

2WD makes it slightly easier to do, but yours is definitely bad enough to change sooner than later.

Back when I wore a much younger man's clothes, for a seal leak like that we would continue to drive it but check the oil level a bit more often.

So what's a 'reasonable' estimate for this job? 8 hours?
You can just pop a new seal in, right? I've got the time, but I'm not sure I have the energy. This is so fokin' wrong too be happening at 90K

Thanks for the reply. If I wanted to make contact and try to make sense to someone at Toyota, do you know the procedure for where to start?
    thx again!

Don't waste your time. The warranty is 5Y/60K, and you agreed to those terms when you bought the truck. If you were a few thousand miles over...that's one thing. You're 40K miles over. It ain't gonna happen.

Just cuz it says Toyota on the side doesn't mean they'll fix it for free forever.

Find a good independent shop, ask that they use an OEM seal rather than aftermarket. 2WD...I'd say 8 hrs it a bit much....but it all depends. Those oil pan bolts look a bit rusty, so they exhaust fasteners are probably rusty-er and might break. I'm guessing you're close the water in FL? Book time kinda goes out the window unless the vehicle is basically in "like new" condition.

You also changed the oil every 3500 miles. I also wore those pants and had RMS leaks.

You will be denied 100% I wont even entertain this. I said 1 year 10,000 miles is the max they will consider.

My 17' was leaking and replaced at 74k. Luckily my extended warranty (1,000 miles short of expiring) paid for itself finally for that repair job.

I’m not a dealer tech and I don’t ever get work done there so I have no idea what the normal rate is for a job requiring transmission removal, but 8 hours seems about right to me based on me pulling transmissions myself.

Unfortunately RMS are semi common on this engine. Seemingly more common than other engines I’ve observed that have 1-piece seal designs, which are far more rare to leak than 2-piece designs typically. I don’t know why this one has seemingly more reported leaks. PCV is usually the cause but you’ve already addressed that.

If you can pull a transmission then you can do it yourself. That’s what I’d opt for, but I can understand why others wouldn’t want to. I would use an OEM seal.

Hopefully your crank isn’t scored in a way that will cause the new seal to leak too.
