From what I understand about it, it is either working or not, atleast the style that is on our trucks.
I just had to change the primary O2 on mine. You can run a test on the sensor with a multimeter. Take an ohm reading between the two black wires. Bank 1 sensor 1 on a 1gen should read between 0.8 and 1.4 ohms. My replacement one read 1.2 and the old one that was throwing the code had no continuity between them. Just a quick tip to pass on.

The wires that are coming off of the sensor itself is where I took the readings. Just unplug the sensor and test it at the connector.

Just did this to mine this weekend. Rear O2 sensor was throwing a CEL and the nuts were a pain to get off.

Good advice: Spray with liquid wrench or wd40 for a couple days before attempting.

Question: Where can I get one of those o2 sensor shields?

Rust is definitely a pain in the ass. On my brother's 97 4runner it threw a CEL and it was the rear o2 sensor. I crawled under the 4runner to see how hard it would be to change. Underneath the 4runner I found the o2 sensor just dangling there hanging by the wires, the bolts completely rusted through letting the o2 sensor come out

I need to replace the Downstream Oxygen Sensor bank 1 sensor 2 on my 2003 Toyota Tacoma 4WD as well. I crawled under the truck and saw that heatshield blocking the view of the sensor. Is there noway to take that shield off without cutting it? That seems kind of stupid that they would make them that way knowing that at some point the sensor will have to be replaced. There has to be a way to take it off and put it back on.

If you only cut it enough to bend it out of the way and not totally off, you can reinstall it and bend the shield back into it's original position. (see the 3rd picture at the beginning of this post) This is what I did instead of an expanded metal 'one off' shield design, I got lazy.

If that is what you did then that picture looks confusing. lol Picture 3 looks like you completely cut the shield off. Then you took the left side of the shield and it is just hanging from the right side.

A guy at my mom's work who is also a mechanic on the weekends told her would do it. I will buy the part and let him install it. He told her its easy and only a 10 minute job. I laughed at that. You really have no idea how long something is gonna take especially with rust and corrosion. Maybe it will take him 10 minutes to do but I highly doubt it would have only taken me that long. lol Before I order the part. Denso Part # 2344189 is a perfect fit correct? It says OE next to it. However, it does not say OE Direct Fit. Should I save 25 bucks and go with the OE one or get the OE Direct Fit? Stupid questions I know.

Anyone know if the replacement nuts M8 X 1.25 13mm are the same for a 2003 Tacoma? Are they a lock nut or just a regular hex nut? Just curious. Thanks.

I just ordered two from rockauto.com. Shipped it was 125 bucks and much much cheaper than local parts stores. I will let you know how the install goes.

I just put regular nuts on mine, along with some anti-sieze compound, just in case.

Thread is only a little old at this point but, question:

The bolts holding my rear o2 sensor have no nuts at all. Pulled out of a traffic circle and exhaust gets real loud and sounds like crap. A little looking around finds the sensor hanging loose next to the exhaust. Both bolts are completely corroded with no signs of any nuts working themselves of recently. Is there a preferred method to clean up the studs to accept new nuts or completely replace studs?

I did this operation a couple of months back. Ordered both front and rear for my '03 from RockAuto.

Here in Chicago dealing with the typical rust issues...front one was easy enough to do myself. The rear was a whole different story. After an hour or so of trying to dick around with it...ended up taking it to a muffler shop and paid them $40 cash to install it.

    Money well spent.
