Unfortunately often in the automotive industry, fixes only go forward in time. Zero fucks given about trucks already made.

You’re ignoring or overlooking a lot of variables here but im glad you’re having good results with your flaps.

My 3G had wider stance, wider, larger tires as well. I’ve owned plenty of trucks with plenty of flap, tire, body combinations. This 4G TH had by far the most dramatic effect right out of the lot despite being presented as ‘off road ready’. Sure, the Toyota paint might be shitty, but proportionately to other Toyota gens and brands, not this much.
Body lines, length of the vehicle, wheel well shapes, fender sizes and protrusion, tire types, are big contributing factor here; Toyota wouldn’t admit to the issue and be willing to repay thousands to re-paint boxes if they didn’t acknowledge the issue. I’m told they have committed to repainting other folk’s TH’s as well and that I’m not the only one who has brought this forward.

Looks good! Looks like the flare is already taking a blasting as well

Yeah this makes sense. Maybe they will start offering a wider style slider or something instead of the factory, tight to the body sliders. I’ll likely provide a near and long term update to my dealer to pass to Toyota after I implement all my changes. Maybe they will extend PPF further around the fender as well in the future.
For now I would recommend anyone add even DIY PPF to that area before they start to get a bunch of chipping. Thankfully, the trucks have aluminum box sides.

Have anything in writing from Toyota or the dealership validating this statement or is it a wish?

Longer flexible rubber flaps will solve the problem. You just haven't figured that out nor how to install them yet.

What good does repainting do? That's a bandaid not a fix.

I'm not the one suggesting repainting but I do agree with you. See below

What do you mean is it a wish? My re-paint is Toyota approved. The new flares are ordered and waiting at the dealership. I’m not sure what your question is. I stated it as such because it is confirmed.

You seem to be missing the fact that I already ordered additional protection in various forms including larger flaps, which I stated long before you decided to chime in with your “one size fits all” solution.

The fact you dont understand that longer flexible flaps does not change how the air moves around a vehicle body lines is part of the shortcoming here. If you have a flat or angled forward facing surface, it is inherently going to catch more air (and therefore debris) than a surface that is parallel to the direction of travel (like the body sides of most trucks). Also, the length of the body (eg: a 6 foot box vs 5 foot box) changes the amount of time and opportunity for rocks to bounce or hit other things. Rocks also bounce, they are not directly thrown back. Air moves rocks (and grit) around, including as air wraps around an outwardly extended wheel/mud flap/flared fender and ‘wraps’ back in to the vacuum next to a narrower body side, before again hitting a rear-flared fender or fender flare, like a curveball in baseball. The rocks can also spin and impart their own curve while in flight.
You’re just stuck in your groove with your flaps and your argument and unable to accept an oversight by Toyota in their design could result in increased exposure regardless of end user actions. Driving a 90 000 ‘off road ready’ truck off the lot and getting smashed in rock chips in a specific spot within ~30 miles of gravel at reduced speed in FRONT of a rear fender is not typical damage after driving a truck off the lot and going down a couple gravel roads, regardless of mud flap size. I drove around with NO flaps on a dodge with straight sides and flush wheels for 15000km and had far less rock damage to the truck body than on this trailhunter.

The repaint is offered to correct the already existing damage. It’s never been presented as a solution… but I dont want to drive around with a truck covered in chips and a wrecked fender flare if they’ll re paint/replace for free?

I suggested to Toyota that I would be taking my own steps (previously listed) to minimize new damage from occurring; the service manager suggested to me that would make them more likely to approve re-painting it.

If you look at a 4th Gen the body has much more pronounced bulges over the wheels, so naturally it is going to get pelted more. I think what he is trying to say is that even with longer flaps the body panels are more prone to being pelted by rocks. He is going to install longer aftermarket flaps and more of a running board style slider or running boards themselves. I believe what he is also saying is that for a stock truck the protection/ design of the fenders is kinda poor for a new truck. More ppf or even a textured plastic piece similar, but larger than the ranger raptor would be a start. I have seen a few 1/2 tons around here that have small mud flaps installed under their running boards a foot or 2 back which would work well also I assume as you can see that’s where the debris hits the truck from off the front tires.

Now that is another excellent idea to try if one has the running boards!

I was planning to try some options like that and had ordered a second spare pare of flaps for that in fact, but was going to install new parts (post re-paint) and see where the gaps were with the new setup based on snow/ice/dirt accumulation marks.

Have my 2024 from July 13, 2024, stone chipped driving slow on gravel at under 150 km from new. I have been asking for solution from Dealer and Toyota Canada.
I installed aftermarket very large flaps, repllacing tiny OEM, added some plastic film as well, just front of box flares and paint forward of that on box affected. the running board retract at 5 kmph, Toyota says they cannot be programed to stay out longer. I have not pushed to resolve till now. Toyota body shop says complete box side repaint to fix. Pefer not a repaint on complete box sides, Toyota will answer soon and I will post result. love the truck otherwise.

Unfortunately that's how all painting works, just like proper correction of home wall. Paint ages, and even the exact same color from different batch will differ. On a car, have to prep, which includes full sanding and full priming, on the entire continuous panel. Impossible to partial sand/prime, as the stone chips have gone to the metal.
