my truck has been operating under normal conditions, until just recently i jumped in my truck except this time it wouldn't move. Its a trd sport 4x4 6sp manual. The E brake was disengaged and i made sure of this. I tried forward and reverse and my truck felt like it was locked up. I reved it up and released the clutch and my back left tire would spin but my rear right was locked. I tried putting it in 4lo and it also had a hard time just moving and ended up dragging the rear right tire. It feels like my truck is strapped down when trying to move. Anyone had this problem? Maybe the right rear E brake isn't releasing or the rear diff is shot? It got towed to toyota and still waiting for them to diagnose it.

Was/is your truck part of the huge recall on the rear differential? Is there any leakage happening around the seal of the diff?

Did you squirt the drums with a hose recently, then let it sit? Could just be locked up from dried water residue and/or rust. I had this happen to me once, so I just put it on jack stands and tapped them with a dead blow hammer. Loosened right up.

Lol no, i was in my yard. I did rinse down the underneath with a water hose prior to that because i did launch my boat but neither my truck nor wheels got any contact with the ocean.

And 4lo would not break it free? That would be pathetic. Especially since braking material does not rust, just the drum.

Good luck OP. Let us know what they find. At least you were not rolling down the road!

I've only heard of one other member having this problem, driving down the highway and his diff just locked up. Turned out his diff was leaking oil and became dry and then exploded from the head/friction. But that was before the recall. I wouldn't mess with it anymore and risk damaging something else. Have it towed to your nearest dealership for warranty work.

Others have reported similar symptoms with water (rust) and or cold (frozen) and it was seized drum brakes. People were making comments like "they've been making drum brakes for 100 years how could these not work" "Toyota has special drum brakes that trap in the water" Many other ideas of why but I don't think it ever was really figured out. The dealer should come back with everything looked fine.

It's entirely possible something failed inside the brake drum and is wedged in there preventing it from spinning. I have had the friction material separate from the backing and fall off, causing it to get stuck in the rear wheel and lock it up.

If only you had a rear locker you could bust that puppy free on your own...

This does NOT sound at all like a differential problem. You wouldn't be going anywhere with a diff problem...not just spinning one wheel. The fact you spun one wheel with the other wheel stationary says that this COULD NOT be a differential problem, that is the differential working properly.

Something else is jamming up the works.

I don't see how the diff could have failed while it was just sitting there but maybe. Sounds to me like the right rear brake is locked up for whatever reason. Please post up the diagnosis.

The Dealer is going to check it and say everything was fine, it's a semi common problem with the Toyota rear drum brakes.

Should change title to "Right Rear wheel locked up" or you're gonna have a lot of worried people.
