The upper end of my rear left shock came loose. Shock swung down and dragged the highway. Temporary tied up loosely with bailing wire to frame. It appears that the bolt or nut backed out as well as the assumed blushing and the shock vibrated out of position. No parts were found in the immediate vicinity. Need help figuring out what parts are I need. Is it a bolt or a nut?And what size? Can these be purchased easily? And what about the bushings. Gonna wait to crawl under in case anyone has questions I need to look for...

^It's a spigot welded on the frame. The center of the spigot has a threaded hole. The shock bushing goes over the spigot. Then a bolt with large washer is threaded on the end to trap the bushing in place.

A few other ways it could have failed:
The bolt broke due to rust
The spigot broke off from the frame due to rust
The shock bushing hoop broke off from the shock shaft due to rust

Yes I agree with that description. I just got under and confirmed it.And have pictures. I'm trying to determine the size of the bolt and length As well as where to find the bushings. Are the bottom ones the same size?

Are the shocks original equipment? If so consider replacing both shocks, bushings, bolts etc.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Best route it to just go buy two new shocks. The upper portion hardware will come with the shocks. All you will need to reuse is the lower bolt. No need to go crazy, whatever oem replacement your local auto store has will be fine if you are stock. Prior to this, with you having a 1st gen. Prior to doing any of this locate the mounting points and ensure your frame is good and they are where they should be.

Those bolts usually don't spontaneously separate. Somethings afoot

I replaced the shocks a year ago. I have no doubt I am to blame for failing to torque them properly. I have already found replacement bolt and washer.. but finding the correct replacement bushings without having to buy new shocks all over again is not going well so far.

    Consider using "Blue Loctite".

I had this same issue not too long ago.
I actually have a replacement set of bushings if you cannot find one.

Don't consider it, just do it and use it.

I have had the same problem on my 1987 SR5 as well as on my current Tacoma. Once on the lower shock bolt, and twice on the upper. Once on the right side and again on the left. The first time was in 1994 with around 60,000 miles on it, the last about 2 years ago with 110,000 miles on it.

The last time I used blue locktite and torqued the nuts to spec. We'll see what happens...

When you start wondering if it is tight enough about a quarter a turn past that.
