My '13 taco has this issue as well. I put in a new head unit and faded the sound all the way to the rear, barely any sound. Even with my ear to the speaker and volume almost maxed I could barely hear anything.

Heck doesn't really matter to me, ain't nothing worth listening to on the Radio or XM anyway... all the same boring b.s.

I suppose I could build my own Spotify list and then listen to what suits me.

Having more balanced sound throughout the truck would nice.

I solved this by adding my own speakers and a 4 channel amp. Can adjust the front and rear gain with that. Also putting in an android based head unit soon that will give me finer control over it all.

I just changed all of my JBL speakers.

I had no rear speaker sound either.

When I removed the rear speakers I was very surprised as they have a 6 inch speaker installed but the actual speaker is only 2.5 inches across, the rest is just fill. As soon as i saw the rear speakers, it all made sense. The new full 6 or 6.5, cannot remember, Reference Speakers sound great. I get sound from the rear with using lower volume than before the swap. My sound system came alive with just new speakers.

Access Cab w/ non-JBL and rear speakers (or amp) do suck. Ridiculously quiet. My Highlander crushes in comparison. Why put them in at all if the head unit isn't going to power them?

interesting! Do you have any pictures of the stock rears? What did you upgrade to as I know the JBLs are a special resistance.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
The stock speakers don’t pass muster for anyone who wants to really enjoy their music. It’s a lot of work, but with installing new speakers, a sub box with 10” sub, amp, New speaker wire, and line out converter will really wake things up. Keep the stock head unit for full functionality.

I tossed ALL the speakers. I tossed the head unit. I got an aftermarket Pioneer head unit with 4x50 watts RMS. I put in subaru tweets. Pioneer 6x9 3 ways in the front doors. Then for the rear cab, I got a pair of Rockford Fosgate Power series 6x9s and put them into enclosures. I bypassed the stock rear speakers, and run the Rockfords with an Alpine Amplifier. at 2 x 150 watts RMS. The front speakers and tweets run on the Head unit power.

It's nice to have an equalizer. I have a 2017 SR. It came with the most basic stereo. CD player too.:headbang:

Stock head unit and yes the picture above of the rear speakers is sad but does explain the poor sound.

I used the OEM Audio speakers also, great upgrade.

Glad this thread is alive again. It was the first thing I noticed when I was setting my truck up the first week I got it.

So the only fix is an amp?
Why did Toyota even put speakers in the back if you can’t hear them?

3rd gen non JBL HU have the same issue, the actual HU itself plus JBL factory HU does not have enough to power them all efficiently and effectively therefore one must add a in line amp, its really simple as getting a plug and play harness, and installing a 400w or 500w amp under the seat or wherever you choose. Once that is done, man the speakers come to fruition and sound really good, especially if you have a nice aftermarket HU. Amazing sound and no need for a subwoofer in some cases.

Not only are the rear speakers junk, the factory entune head unit is not up to par. I recently swapped it out for a joying Android based head unit and the sound is much better. I've got a 2500w amp on my sub and a 4 channel amp for the rest, and everything sounds louder and punchier now. The highs are where I noticed the biggest change. I haven't made any adjustments to my amplifiers, only swapped the head unit. 100% worth the upgrade

I've ordered the Subaru tweeters... Looking for info on the best approach on the rest... I just want a somewhat competent system - hopefully retaining the OEM HU.

I will replace the speakers. I would also consider a small amp if the install was unobtrusive...

For this that have accomplished this - please do share the outcome of your upgrade!

Kicker speaker upgrade Tint Trimmed air dam Taco Tunes amp and sub 275/70/17 Wildpeaks
I put the Subaru tweeters and Kicker 6x9’s front/6 1/2” rear. Same deal, the rear is way too quiet. Added a TTunes 5 channel amp and 12” sub. It’s plenty loud and sounds pretty good. But with amp tuned, the rear speakers still are way softer than the front. I didn’t ever increase the gain on the amp, just leaving it. With the volume I get from the rest you don’t really notice it until you fade it to the rear only.
