Rear traction problem

    What happened to lead you to think you snapped an axle? You would have some serious vibrations with an axle snapped.

    I am pretty sure Jay is on NTC forum so I am surprised he did not post there askign if somebody has axle for cheap...
    Well I do, depending what locker he has if its e-locekr I dont think it will fit. But if it is something else he can get complete side from me . :D he can meet me somewhere in CT Its better then him dying somewhere due to his axle locking up on highway :rolleyes:

    Axle shafts can be had for $75 or so. Check your local autoparts store.
    It's about a 30 min job to replace one and you might could even get by without even hafting to remove your brake line. (just be careful bending the brake line and keep the fitting strait).
    Tire comes off, Hub comes off, 4 bolts and the shaft comes right out.
    Not even a need for an axle shaft puller.

    well one of my buddies wanted to go wheeling, but he was bone stock on an s10 so we went to some little sand pit so I just threw the locker on and didn't use 4hi and I was going up a hill and as i got to the top there was a loud bang, we got out and looked at everything and it seemed fine, then when I got into a parking lot i turned the locker off and put it in drive and it just 'revved' no motion, no grinding noise. I searched another guy's post and he had almost the exact same scenario and said he snapped his axle shaft, I figure if i effed up the diff gears at all it would grind or something, and when I drained it no shavings or anything came out so I also assumed it was the shaft.

    I could be wrong.....but I think your splines would go before the axle actually snaps. Lift both wheel up in the rear with the locker disengaged.
    Turn the wheel by hand that you think has the broken axle shaft.
    If it turns smooth and free without the other wheel going in the opposite direction, it's prob a shaft.
    If you feel resistance and feel clicking in your hand turning that wheel and the other wheel is turning the opposite direction. It's probably the spline.
    Either way, it will have to come out.

    i found one for 130 shipped, the problem wasn't not knowing and waiting on uncertainty, the problem was its my daily driver and the part is in Portland, Oregon which is on the other side of the country so I'm waiting for it to ship not to mention i had to wait for my paycheck and i ordered it on friday so i had to wait for the weekday and yadda yadda

    Jay, are you able to pull an axle? It's not that hard and can be done with basic tools.

    I agree Lurry. Has to be the driver side too since that's the ring gear side.

    Jay, jack up the driver rear (disengage locker)and see if the wheel spins.

    Never done it before, but I'm fairly decent with tools, average handy man, I figured try it, if it doesnt work get a mechanic.
