REAR WHEEL BEARING RETAINING RING REPLACEMENT

Ah yeah. Haven't done one in a while.

 

Where is the tone ring on this axle? It had the wheel speed sensor port on the bearing housing, but I didn't see a tone ring on the axle, just the retainer.

 

I had one recently come in (00-06 Tundra) with the rear axle seal leaking. We were the 4th shop, and I figured out the issue. On Tundras, not sure on Tacomas, the tone ring and retainer are NOT supposed to be pressed all the way down against the bearing.

So they kept replacing bearings and retainers and putting it back how it came off. This lead to the retainer not riding in line with axle seal.

I figured it out because our press removal tool would not fit, since retainer was pressed too far. Then I referred to this youtube video and copied the guy's measurements of how far to press. Fixed the leak. Again this is for a Tundra.
