Just took the new 2018 Tacoma offroading recently and had a blast. The only issue I had was trying to climb a fairly steep hill that was covered in very loose sand. In order to get up the hill I would try and get a bit of speed but as soon as my wheels started loosing traction I would get tons of wheel hop in the rear.

    My questions are:

    Has anyone experienced this?
Is this a normal thing? I have a 2001 tacoma and never really experienced such issues.
If this is normal is there parts out there that would resolve this issue?

    Thanks for any input!

    Sounds about right.

I have never experienced it, but I saw it in higher powered cars participating in after dark illegal drag racing many years ago.

I can’t really remember back to the days of seeing the problem with dune buggies on the hill climb at Glamis Ca. while riding dirt bikes and buggies there. My mind fails me somewhat going that far back!

Also at the amateur drags. Volkswagen Beetles were extremely fast. It was amazing what people could do with those little engines. I was truly surprised.
There was some wheel hop going on at times.

As you gain and loose traction your axle wraps and unwraps. That energy release causes the hopping.

You could try some better shocks and also additional leafs to stiffen up the pack and keep your axle from wrapping up as much. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, old style traction bars which help to prevent axle wrap are probably not a good option for a Tacoma 4x4 in the dirt. I had them on my old Mustang.

Perhaps you’ll get some help from someone on TW with some expertise regarding the matter.
