My local dealership has told me that it’s the emergency brake cables
my investigation it Seems like a many 3rd Gen Tacoma owners are having the same problem Has anybody found out the answer to what’s actually causing this issue?

Welcome to TW. I don't recall any large-scale brake cable issues for the 3rd Gen, but then again what the hell do I know! Depending on where you live, we do see a lot of temporary rear wheel lock ups due to water getting in the drum and freezing during the winter months. Good luck figuring it out!

I think it's usually the pads and drums sticking.
It seems the main cause is moisture, as most have the issue after washing. Drive it and let it dry.

    Hi Buck,
The issue first appeared in the winter of 2013.
it has reappeared just a few days ago and the weather was in the 50s and again based on my investigation I’ve witnessed many videos on YouTube of people having the same issue of their right or left rear just locking up

i’m thinking there should be a recall on this, but I’ve haven’t seen any recall notice on this issue.

2013? Wait a minute; what year is your truck? This is the 3rd Gen Taco forum, so a 2013 issue could be an entirely different answer than what I said.

Oh hell, then just let the dealer fix the issue if they found it. I assume you are still under warranty.

PS: not that is matters, but your thread title says "2018"

They can also flash rust together. So if your drums got wet either drive around for a bit to dry them off or don't use your parking brake.

I had a bad cable on my 2015 that would stick and cause that wheel to lock up. The sleeve got cut from rubbing on the leaf spring bracket and water/dirt got in there. It would freeze in cold weather.

When it would stick, instead of banging on the drum or wheel I learned to grab the cable and pull it back and forth until the shoes let go.

Don't worry about it, as mentioned moisture will cause this issue. Even in above freezing temps. Happened to me briefly the morning after washing my truck. Didn't go for a drive to dry them off. Happened again recently after using the pay and spray one evening in below freezing temps. It was the first stop after washing. The brakes momentarily stuck after the stop. Just made sure to keep driving to dry the brakes out.

Yes in 2023 I had the dealership replace the emergency, brake cable system for $1200. I don’t think this is the issue for the wheels locking up…..
I wasn’t using the emergency break at the time of this recent incident
I was in a parking lot, put the truck into reverse to move out of the spot and the passenger wheel were locked up put the truck back in the drive drag the wheel put the truck in neutral cross my fingers that it disengage whatever was going on and that worked

You should've mentioned in the 1st post that the cables have already been replaced. Is the dealership aware they're only 2 years old?

Does the parking brake even work, or does the pedal go to the floor and never set?

Has anyone even taken the drums off and looked in there yet? Broken hardware can jam up a drum ..

Find a good independent shop to help you out.

Your dealer is either not giving good service or you're not understanding what they're saying..
