There's a saying in the BMW motorcycle world that is appropriate here:

    "They all do that"

Had the parking brake freeze up on me twice in the morning both times I washed the truck the previous evening. I will continue to use the parking brake because it wasn’t an optional Equipment like your turn signals are o_O

Those wheel chalks are a good idea but I’d be damned to use them on a new truck every time

Some times freeing up a stuck parking brake cable is as easy as crawling under the truck and giving the cables a few tugs.

This could be drum brake related as well. How many miles on it? Have the drums ever been serviced? Clean, adjust, lube.

I've only got 15K on it. Unless it's part of the 5, 10, or 15k services then they probably haven't been serviced. Still waiting to hear back from the dealer so we'll see.

Just how cold are you taking about? My land cruisers parking break would stick around -10f.
Also, what state are you in? This helps others guesstimate an issue you maybe having.

Oh nothing that cold. I'm in Utah, we're just talking 20s, maybe teens. Park in a garage though, so it's only when I've been out in the cold for a few hours that it would happen.

Well, rear brakes to my 2017 Lexus GSF lock up as well in the winter or after it gets wet. Freezing can happen to any brake system.

Just heard back from the dealer, and it sounds like they're agreeing with everyone here. Dealer is saying that the truck moved just fine when they got it, but they suspect parking brake freezing up. My guess is it stayed out without the parking brake on, so no problem when the dealer looked at it, of course.

They say they see this kind of thing with lifted trucks frequently (mine has a 3in lift) because it stretches the parking brake lines tight, and causes the parking brake to seize up when it gets too cold. They said that it can also happen in transmissions that have been regeared. I haven't regeared mine, so that's not the culprit, obviously. So, next steps are to probably get different brackets that don't stretch the lines and see if the problem continues. My kit didn't come with any, but I'm sure I can find some.

I'm still a little skeptical since the wheels could move in reverse last night, but not forward with drive engaged even after the truck was warmed up. I always park with the brake applied, but never have this issue without first engaging 4H (until last night), hasn't coincided with washes like some other members have experienced. Maybe parking/spinning on snow for a few seconds is enough to get moisture in there to cause the problem to get worse? I dunno.

Happy it's not a major issue, and happy that it's a pretty simple proposed solution. Thank you for the input and suggestions everyone!

If it happens again give the parking brake cables a quick tugging, often that fixes it right away. By design the rear brake pads cam into the drums when driving forwards, that’s why you have to back up not forwards.

Makes sense why I could back up then. Thanks for the info! Hopefully everything works well from here on out, but I'll give them a tug next time.

there was a thread last winter of a guy that bent an axle.

His brakes locked up and he tried using his locker to get it to move.
Its a bit crazy to think that the layer of ice was that strong that it made his axle bend but same time he lived in colorado. he shouldve known better.

Definitely felt like if I had pushed it something similar would have happened to mine. Glad it didn't though

If you read the thread I posted you may see that the issue us outside of what the dealer described. My rig is stock and mine still locked up

I read through it, it's a similar problem to that thread but not with the front brakes. They said they were able to replicate the problem again and blamed it on the lift though, so who knows. I'm going to try giving the extended bracket idea a try and see if that fixes it.

    Mine is stock suspension
The 2 times it happened to me I was trying to go in reverse, had to really get on it to release. Since then I now just go for a quick drive after I wash

Remember that the drums brakes are self energizing going forward so will be easier to move in reverse if frozen up or stuck on a bit.
