I would for sure man! Spray the hell out of it! Oddly enough for me was that I just
bought rtv seal that I was going to put all around it AFTER the heavy rains stopped. :D too late!

This is exactly what mine looked like. Took it in, they replaced the 3rd brake light. Then called to say it was still leaking and they ordered a new back window to be replaced. I logged a case with Toyota customer service just in case.

I checked mine today. Not leaking but noticed there is a small gap between the plastic surround on the brake light and the cab. The gasket seems to be sealed against the cab but through it weird that the plastic surround was not tight to the cab. Is this normal?

Dumbest f’ing design ever. Who the f makes it so that you can’t remove the bolts or screws from outside?!?!? You have to acces the screws from inside under the headliner. So stupid. Look at every other truck out there, the cargo light/lens is secured from outside the vehicle with screws. Sorry, rant over. Through the research that I have done within the last few days, this problem seems to be only with double cabs. The light on regular cabs & access cabs is able to be unscrewed from outside the vehicle. Go figure. Waiting to see what the dummies at the dealership tell me.

I put black gasket seal around mine before winter but noticed yesterday moisture in the light. Might have to re do it to prevent moisture in the cab again. I need a better fix without dropping the headliner

Thanks for the direct number to Toyota. My call was answered promptly and Tammy searched for rear taillight recalls. She also made a note regarding the leak for future documentation. I just discovered the leaking window in my 2016 TRD last week. When mentioned to my local dealer the tech said he had never seen it before and offered to silicone around the window gasket... That was when I left and searched this site. I also contacted a glass company who suggested checking the light gasket before moving forward with the window seal. I am looking into a new light gasket/seal.

Just brought mine in for the 3rd time because of rain leak through back window or somewhere

1st time. Six months after purchase... back seat soaking wet after bad rainstorm.
They resealed the back glass, said it was fixed.

2nd time. 5 months later, leaking again, though not as bad.
They ordered new back windshield and I insisted on new rear seat covers, which they replaced.
    Said it was fixed.

3rd time. Today, dropped it off, told the guy that, “I’m VERY disappointed.”

Still leaking slightly, drops of rain water in same seat area and the back seat and ceiling upholstery is stained. I told them, that it needs to be changed or cleaned up. I should not have water stains on a year and a half old truck.

He did mention that a TSB is about to go out on 3rd gen Tacomas for leaking through third brake light...

...and he will get with the service manager and they’ll take care of it and “make it right.”

    Okay... we’ll see...

Yes this is the TSB. I have confirmed this with my dealership. Just be prepared because after talking to several dealerships, it appears Toyota is being very selective on how much information they want to reveal about this problem.

Thanks man. Finally got to drop mine off last evening after a week of the dealership not having a loaner car for me. I'm now waiting for their bull$hit 'diagnosis'. Mentioned the TSB to service writer & got looked at like I had two heads. He then proceeded to say something about the rear glass seal. That's when I stopped him & told him that I'm 99% sure the leak is coming from the cargo light & that's what they need to concentrate on. Needless to say that I'm not very confident that they are competent enough to fix my issue. We shall see ....

This whole situation is very concerning to me. Toyota KNOWS something is very wrong however they are crossing their fingers people don't call them out on it or the problem doesn't arise for most owners until after their factory warranty is up.

I called my dealership and told them to order the replacement part and call me when it arrives and then I'll bring my truck down for their "diagnosis". I figured they will be more willing to fix the gasket if they already have the part at the dealership.

What I was told is that you have to purchase the whole lamp, they don't offer a "gasket". However, there is a nationwide backorker on the lamp assembly (e.g. $150)... and no one is aware of this problem? Pathetic.

There is always a solution if you want to.
Facebook - pictures and a write up with "DO NOT! buy any new taco, major problem with ...
    Tweeter - same thing
On the tailgate make a sign with WARNING! Do NOT buy any new taco, bad assembly, mold issue. Call me for info.
Drive around the leaderships on a few weekends and see what happens.
Also contact any/all truck/car magazines and let them know about the problem.
I bet they will come to you to fix it. Tell then you will be ready in a few weeks, need to let more people know about the problem. Toyota will love it.

So I brought my 16 Tacoma in with the rear leak. The dealership confirmed this was a very common problem and would diagnose the issue and give me a call. Got the call an hour later saying they couldnt pinpoint where the leak was, but that it was leaking.....DUH! Anyways they wanted to charge me for a diagnostic to see where the water was coming in from and they had to drop the headliner. I said it was unacceptable because my truck is less than two years old. They said since I am out of 3/36K, I am not covered and there was nothing they could do to fix it unless they further diagnosed the issue and confirmed it was the 3rd brake light assembly....in which case, I would have to pay $170 for it plus labor to install.

I called Toyota Customer Service, and the lady said without a FULL diagnostic to pinpoint where the leak is from, they cannot provide any assistance to help my case. I am PISSED! She recommended I bring the car back, get the full diagnostic and then call them back with the case number and they will see IF there is anything they can do for me at that time. I mentioned there was a TSB on this and she said "A TSB is not a recall" and it just provides information about certain issues...thats it.

Any suggestions on how I should proceed?
