I have a bit of play in what i think is the yoke going into the rear diff (rear axle from driveshaft) i have new u joints to put in but im 100% certain the play is coming from what i believe is the yoke. Here's a picture...

    20180824_154824.jpg

So, what is it and how do i fix it? Im wondering if this is a contributing culprit to my vibration issues.

And, while i have your attention, when i have my clutch pedal to the floor, i still get a jump when shifting from neutral to 1st sometimes. What do you make of that?

As always, thanks for the advice!!!

You need to pull the diff and have it repaired. Without the proper tools you cannot do it yourself.

Consider upgrading to a solid crush sleeve instead of the current setup.

Improper set pinion will lead to the diff grenading.

Can you take a video at all of the play? A little is to be expected but more than 1/8" would mean an issue. It does look like your seal is leaking as well unless you sprayed it with something

You have Axle Wrap, you’re not totally screwed you have bad leafs obviously, and the thunk happens at stop/starts the leafs went bad as usual and cause the diff to get fucked as well as other parts of your driveshaft. Fix the leaves first and while the axle is out you can fix the pinion gear, you may need a new one or just a rebuild and a seal. Good luck hit me up if you have ?’s I deal w/this a lot.o_O

However, when i bought the truck the leaves were shot pretty bad. So i do think you got the right idea. How would one go about fixing the pinion gear?

A shop versed in Tacomas would be your best option, unless you have an incremental dial indicator to measure and adjust the backlash on the pinion gear meeting the ring gear.

pinion movement seems acceptable with the combined backlash of ring gear and spider gears.

replace the u joints before diving into the differential

Actually wasn't that long ago. But i literally just wrapped up putting a new one in. I bought the truck off the original owner, my friend. I asked if he had done any interval maintenance, and he said: "i only did what the oil change place said needed to be done" lol.

The clutch thing is a bit odd to me. It's a brand new clutch with about 25k on it. Like i said, sometimes, pedal to the floor, it will jump a little when i get it up into 1st. Almost like it's not disengaging completely.

More concerning is the amount of grease that slip yoke on the driveshaft loses. Just greased it again and it extended about half an inch before it started spitting grease out. And while i had it off for the u joint, i looked on the inside, and it was almost dry again. I think i greased it around March last year.

you dont grease it until it comes out. that shaft needs to slide in when the suspension cycles. grease being non compressable has to go somewhere so it just blows out the seal.

You can actually blow out your bearings because the driveshaft has no flex and all the pressure now goes to the axle bearing or transfer case bearing
