Hey gents - here's an update from the Crutchfield rep when I asked about the T-Harness and Maestro RR:

"It's entirely possible that using the T-harness in conjunction with the Maestro RR will allow you to retain the use of the Tacoma factory backup camera on a "jerry rigged" basis. However, we don't recommend that accessory combination for a smooth-running, dependable backup camera connection."

I'm gonna run with the experience voiced in this forum / thread. Thanks for all the input. Now I just need to hone in on a deck.... Cheers guys.

Sounds like BS and they want you to buy a new camera.

I have a 2010 tacoma and replaced the head unit back in 2014 and found instructions here on TW on how to "tap" to the video signal wire in the wire harness near the obd connector. the wire is connected to rca connector that then goes into the head unit (I got a pioneer). I have since upgraded my head unit to pioneer 2440nex and backup camera video still shows. 2010 oem head unit does not display backup camera video. it shows in rearview mirror instead.

did someone say you can view backup camera video on pioneer 2440 without switching to reverse? how?

I have option on my Pioneer head unit to turn camera all the time or just when put in reverse.

Crutchfield is somewhat right, probably can't get the back up cams video signal from behind the radio. You have to get it either from close to the camera, kick panel, pillar, or elsewhere.

If your camera is powered by accessory power, you should be able to view it anytime you want.

If you go to the audio forum and search there are plenty of people who have used the factory camera and have a great picture.Ithink you have to use a high quality video cor

You can do it, all the camera has is Video positive, Video negative, power input (6V) and ground.

One thing to consider is the factory camera (at least on my Tacoma) was powered at 6V. The factory radio provides 6V out when the 12V signal is applied to the head unit from the reverse input. I made a converter for my Tacoma, although there are converters available. From there the V+ and V- end up on a RCA cable to plug into the rear of the head unit. I have read that many put straight 12V to the cameras without problems.

I would suspect your camera is the same as I did the exact opposite of what you're doing on my BRZ and ended up using a version of the mirror in older Tacomas to do it.

The factory BRZ head unit was equipped to display from a backup camera. However the 2016 BRZ doesn't have steering wheel controls and the factory radio was mainly controlled by a touchscreen. It required too much attention to operate so I replaced it with a double din unit I could operate by feel, however I lost the backup camera.

I contacted Bob Prim, the mirror guy, to see if he had a mirror with camera available and essentially ended up with a version of the mirror in the older Tacomas. The Gentex mirror wiring had inputs for reverse, ignition hot, ground, 6V out to the camera (6V in this case was supplied by the mirror instead of the radio), V+, V- and camera ground. On the BRZ, since I already had the reverse, ignition hot and ground at the factory mirror, I had to run wiring down to the head unit to send 6V camera power, V+, V- and camera ground back to the camera using factory wiring.

Since the camera inputs are at the mirror location, you may want to run a cable from that location down to the radio.

You should have the same basic wiring at the mirror location and can make all of your power connections above the headliner and only run three conductors down to the head unit for V+, V- and the 12V signal to turn the video mode on on your new head unit.

Basically, you'll take a 12V reverse signal from your factory harness and tie it into the aftermarket head unit reverse input (this will put the unit in camera mode) and also supply 12V to a converter to drop voltage down to 6V. Take that 6V output and connect it to the camera power supply wherever you access it. If you're making splices to an RCA type cable, V+ is the center pin and V- is the outer shell. To get the best quality it would be best to solder the connections and insulate them properly with heat shrink.

I apologize that this is a long explanation, hope that it helps you get what you need.

after fiddling around with the pioneer 2440nex settings, I am able to select "camera view" from the drop down menu to view the rear view camera video. The only problem is, it only works when I first start the truck, or right after I switch to drive from reverse. It seems like the power to the rearview camera is shut off after some time. I did not check for how long it is available. if say I select camera view after driving sometime, I do not see anything. I had tapped the video signal from a wire around the obd connector area to a yellow rca plug connected to the pioneer head unit (I found instructions for this here in TW and I think crutchfield has same instructions for the old model head unit I used before the current one). camera is stock oem rear view camera that came with 2010 tacoma. I have seen youtube video where someone with 2011 tacoma added a switch to the rearview mirror to turn on the rear view camera on the mirror anytime. so I am thinking the rearview camera must be powered on while engine is running.
