I think it boils down to a price advantage more than a MPG advantage. The 2.7L is bound to be cheaper. For those of us that don't need the 4.0L's power, it's worth saving $$. Plus, if I want to, I can eek out more than just 2-3 MPG with the 2.7L/5-speed combo vs. the 4.0L.

I own a Tacoma AC with the 2.7 4 cyl. Bought it used so didn't have a lot of choice though I could have walked away from it. The important thing is I didn't walk away. I was quite happy after the test drive and bought it.

The engine has enough power to do anything I've asked it to do so far. It pulls trailers, carries supplies for me and transports me where I need to go. For highway driving it will do 75 mph which is about as fast as you can legally drive without getting a ticket on the freeway.

There is one other reason I like the 4 cyl, it is cast iron and not aluminum. Having owned 2 vehicles with aluminum engines I'll pass on another.

I like the 4 due to the simplicity of the engine.

I went with the 2.7 for reasons already mentioned: cheaper to buy, more economical to run, easier to maintain, simpler, etc. I've got about 3800 miles on a brand new 2014 and love it. It's a base, 4x2, 5-spd, regular cab, so the 2.7 works well.

On my last tank, I tried some mild hypermiling to see how much it could improve MPG. I'm totally stock (for now :D). I filled up the tank on the way to work today, measured 33.4 MPG. So, yeah, I'm very happy with my little truck (and little engine).

With my 1st truck, back in '78 I don't believe there was a choice? Because of the success of that one, I purchased another 4 cyl in '93, sold it in '06 (it's still on the road) and purchased a '06 Tacoma Access cab, otherwise everything the same - 4 cyl, 4WD. Spent 90 days/yr. in the '78 going up and down a not very well maintained gravel road on a mountain to teach skiing. Couldn't kill the thing! Often had to chain up too. Ditto with the '93.

The 2006 isn't the "truck" those other two were. It feels more like a car, but I still bought another. The 4 cyl. is all I need. Less expensive to maintain and they seem to run for ever. The bigger 2.7 L in the '06 adds more oomph, but of course it's a bigger bodied truck than the other ones.

Having the Access cab doors was a real bonus after the struggles getting stuff in an out of the '93 without. Major selling point for me. Tow a small (1600 lbs. wet) trailer, haul gravel, compost, garbage, lumber, etc. Don't know what I'd do with a car!! The size of the payload hasn't been an issue but did add some Timbrens.

All in all the 4 cyl. has served me well, especially the 22 RE's. Had to purchase a 2006 US vehicle since at the time Canada was no longer delivering the 4's, but that's changed now. I wonder why??? [IMG]

Are you happy with the Timbrens? I've been seriously considering some for mine. Thanks.

Best gas mileage for a newer, bulletproof reliable truck. I drive a lot and love being able to throw my surfboard/dirtbike/whatever in the back and not have to think about how far I can drive and how much money that drive is gonna cost me like I did with my previous full size truck. It's also the cheapest truck you can buy and I'm in college so I don't have a whole lot of money flying around. Easy to work on, not that you'll ever need to, and a damn good lookin truck housing that little 4 banger! I was sold when I found a 2.7l 5 speed. It was NOT easy finding a manual 2nd gen tacoma with under 150k miles for under 20k.

If you didn't know, the 2.7 is significantly cheaper than the V6.

I love my 2tr, it's a great work horse motor. But now daddy is pinching pennies so he can swap 1gr into it. I've committed to dumping money into whit, so might as well go full commitment.

Very few situations arise in the mud involving trucks with 33's (or less) that can't be done equally as well with a four banger.

even then, motor size wont help you pull out a big enough truck or a stuck enough truck
