honestly you'd get better mpg by upping to 35's on the 6 as well, all you did was decrease the workload on the engine to turn the wheels by not re-gearing. better comparison would be the AC 4x/PR in 4 vs 6 (trans would factor in too so no exact apples-to-apples but close)

eco-boost is 3.5L twin-turbo V6, but costs significantly more than the V8 and probably would not recoup the cost in mpg over the life of the truck :(

Why get a 2.7L? Let me give my opinions. I mostly do parking lot/ city driving. Sometimes I leave my Tacoma running for 5-10 minutes on end while im checking my equipment or when im running my transfer pump or just when I want to keep the cab heated when im outside. Sometimes I stop and start the motor 50 times a day. The WORST mpg ive ever had with this parking lot / city driving is about 15-17 mpg. Ive also went the other way and did nearly 600 miles on one tank when I took a business trip from Seattle to Portland area and then way up north on I-5. High 20s MPG on highway can be had with the 2.7L 5-speed pretty easily (I have a reg cab), possibly even touch 30 if you're lucky. The notion that the V6 only getting a few less mpg in town is bogus. Ive logged 60k+ of 90% city/parking lot driving on the 2.7L, with tools and a transfer tank with 55 gallons of diesel on tap at all times, and countless thousands on the now sold V6 6-speed. Its not even close MPG (city or highway). And Im towing with the 4 cylinder too. The V6 lived at the gas station.

The real question is why buy the V6? My Tundra gets barely worse MPG and better MPG when loaded and I bought it for less than I sold my Tacoma.

I've owned a lot of V6's, even in 4Runners over the years. Sometimes I chuckle when someone on here posts the mpg they're getting with their Tacoma V6.

The 2.7 does everything I ask it to and gets some decent mileage to boot.

Why? I'm old. I live in Florida, where it's flat. The most I need it to tow is a couple of motorcycles. The 2.7 does just fine on our trips to Western N.C., with the cruise set @ 90 mph. It handled the snow just fine (experience/skill does make a difference). I like getting good MPG, in town and on the highway. I have another 4WD that's much better on sand and tight trails. I wanted a reliable truck that I won't have to replace for 300,000 miles.

    Yep, sure looks that way.

That got my eyebrows up as well.

I'll be watching to see how this new 2.7 6er will play out as time and wear&tear and real-life work go at it.

90MPH on my 08 reg cab 4cyl 5 speed is just about 3K RPM. Not too shabby, she doesn't feel light at all.

Generally though I cruise at around 70-75 MPH, so I get about 25mpg overall.

    So?

This is about why have the 2.7. Minibike's post referred to his 2.7 with an auto going 90MPH. I added in my numbers at the same speed with the same motor and A/C but a manual tranny as comparison.

It really isn't. That's why I posted my own data.

Though I'll admit, past 90 you don't have much left...passing on a 2-lane would be a bad idea, lets just say :)

I did a similar thing on my reg 2wd 5spd 2.7 as well :spy:

Mine keeps pulling from there, might be because it's a race truck that is soon to be turbo'd
That was the diesel too if I remember, sorry post is buried deep in here and I am lazy.

When I had 35's on my truck they weren't balanced, going over 80 it shook like it was falling apart. The first time or two it happened I though I had tore up my transmission.

I have been loyal to Toyotas for almost 30 years now, bought my first one new in 1986 4WD standard cab with 22R 4 cylinder and have loved the little 4 cylinder ever since. I now own a 2001 Tacoma 2.7l 4WD SR5 with TRD package, bought new in 2001 and now has 227,000 miles and runs like a new one still, even after 5,000 miles between oil changes the oil is still bright but I have always used Mobile One 10/30. These little engines are bullet proof.
