Because I cannot effectively drive my Accord on the beach. It was a pita getting my kids in and out of the back of my 2 door Honda. Hard to do any kind of repair work requiring tools and equipment out of the back of an Accord. There is more but I think you get the idea

I chose the Tacoma because I didn't want a full size and this was basically the only viable option.

This will be my fourth Toyota. Loved them all, expecially my '03 4Runner. Great, dependable vehicles. I wanted a truck. Almost had myself talked into a Frontier, just couldn't do it. My wife drives a RAV4 with a 3.5 V-6 (269 HP) I'll have the Tacoma, but I will share with her!

I had a 1989 Toyota pick up and loved it. Traded it for a family car when I got married. 2 kids and 20 years later I decided I wanted another one. Driving by a dealer last week and saw a black 2012 SR5 DC 4X4 and an hour later it was mine. Told the wife later. Asking for forgiveness works better than asking for permission.

I bought a Tacoma for work. It replaced my 04 dodge 3500 4x4 with 498,000 km's. Am hoping for less repairs and a lower fuel bill. Guess time will tell. So far it has been ok. Only getting about 2-3 mpg better fuel economy with my Tacoma then the dodge doing the same job. Even though the tacoma weighs 1/2 as much and probably about 1/4 the power.....

A lot of good responses. I guess I will tell my reasons.

First and foremost, dependability. The 96 I owned is still on the road with over 300K miles on it. Second, the looks. By far the best looking midsize truck and I would argue one of the best looking trucks on the road.

Now, I just have to decide what mods/upgrades I am going to do.

i bought this one because years ago a had a 95 reg cab 4x4 that was lights out on reliability. had 178K when i traded it in. only replaced 2 things on that truck - starter and o2 sensor. no timing belts, radiator, bearings, nothing. so, after a few american junkers, i came crawling back to toyota. the rest is history...

Was moving down from a full size truck and the Taco was the best fit. Was looking for better gas mileage and didn't need all the power of an F-150 any more.

Sometimes you need something that looks better and more reliable than your wife.

After totaling my Titan I realized I didn't need a fullsize and the Tacoma was the best looking midsize on the market. Also wanted to get away from lowered vehicles, all my previous vehicles had frames that were literally 1" off the ground. Hated dodging the smallest of dips on the road. Love my lifted '12, I can barrel through all the streets and parking lots now.

For fuel mileage...at the time my F250 was getting 14mpg and diesel was $2.50/gal. I figured the Toyota would get better mileage (gas was still $1.50/gal) and could tow what I needed towed (I was wrong-I now have an F250 and the Toyota).

Knew that I was going to put a lot of miles on a vehicle and this would be the only vehicle that would hold up to it and still offroad and do the outside activities that I like. At 90,000 miles so far and have only changed a water pump. I would say thats pretty good so far.

Because it's not a Ford Ranger, it's not a GM and there are no more compact trucks sold in the US. There was no real attraction to the Tacoma though, it's just a truck. Unlike a lot of people here I don't want to take it to bed and pump it's tailpipe.
