Hey all, I was thinking about doing a rebuild on my 1997 sr5 3.4 v6 with 160,000m on it. I just simply have no idea where to start. The body is in very good condition, as is everything underneath. I have a budget of around $4,000 and am just looking for everyone's opinions on what I should do first. Do note that I have already changed all of the fluids, hoses, and belts in the car, as well as the thermostat, oil and transmission filter, and air filter. I did these to get it running reliably so I can now focus on modifications. I love this truck to death and want to see it running forever, and since tacomas are so much damn fun anyways, might as well do some cool stuff as well. Looking for good performance on the road, trail, and in the mud.

Is your engine giving you any trouble right now. Mine has 300,000 miles on it and it still drives well

Nope. That's why I'm interested in putting some money into it because of how long they function well for.

What I'm saying is run it like it is until it dies and then buy a new one with low miles on eBay for $900. That's what I'm going to do

That is an option but I'd still like to hear what people have done before.

There's a guy on here with 998,000 miles on his truck. Unless something is wrong with your engine I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'd keep doing preventative maintenance like the water pump, engine accessories, diff. fluids, really whatever the FSM says to do after this many miles.
