Little update! Working on getting my balance shaft delete kit installed. All I have left to do is tap in the new “bearings” with no holes in them. Super stoked to be building this thing now and have some power again!

when installing the timing cover do I use those side gaskets that they send with the timing kit or do I use something like the black rtv I’ll be using on the oil pan?

that’s what I thought about using but then I watched a YouTube video of a guy putting silicone on it. I just don’t want it to leak after I install the engine back in the truck.

sad. Had to tig weld the top of the block and take it to a machine shop and have them cut it back to factory spec. Would have had it decked but the guy at the machine shop looked at his computer files for the 3rz and there is no tolerance to deck so I had my cousin fill in the pits and the machine shop will clean it up.

Aaaaand to top it off. My head gasket came damaged. The idiots at Toyota parts deal put the head gasket in the same box with 10 head studs and the head studs damaged the gasket.

Sorry to hear that. It’s better to find the problems now than to have issues down the road.

is there a sequence to tightening connecting rod caps? I can’t find anything on that. I know there’s a sequence for main bearing caps and head bolts but I’m not sure about connecting rod caps.

    Dirt, miles, and wear.
They usually just get tightened in steps. There is no pattern because the rod bolts only clamp the rod and the rod floats on the crank; it's not one of many bolts clamping a large piece like the head or block. For that reason, you can finish torquing one rod cap before moving onto the next. However, I prefer to do one step at a time on all relevant fasteners so it's easier to keep track of what's been done.

I had the exact same issue with mine from Ourisman Toyota. The bolts scratched the surface of the head gasket through the plastic. However the manager of the parts dept made me a lifelong customer as to how he treated the situation. I'll never shop anywhere else

Any chance you'd be willing to share your rebuild costs? Also, curious on where you sourced non-OEM Toyota parts? Any other resources you used other than FSM, Chilton's/Haynes? Any links you've got would be helpful.

    Appreciate it!

Which seal packing is the best to use for the head gasket where it meets the front of the block? It gives a part number but I can’t find it.
