Okay. I'll keep this brief. I had my engine rebuilt, recently. Cams, crank and pistons aren't brand new. Everything else is. I've only put about 120 miles on it over the past week. Had to change the oil before driving it due to flooding it and the oil smelling like gas. Now...Today I've noticed that there's a rattling tapping noise coming frome the engine. Is it safe to assume that it's not normal?

Only way I know you can get gas in your oil....is past the rings....

someone correct me if I'm wrong...

I would check the crankcase ventilation and make sure thats correct..

Pcv valve, its hose, and make sure that nipple going into the throttle body is not all carboned up.........the egr port going into the throttle body is a big carbonator....all that comes together right at the rear of the throttle body/intake plenum.
    mine was completely carboned up...

If you have a big vacuum break somewhere......then you may not have enough to pop the Pcv valve open.....

A bad/failing break booster can be a massive vacuum leak.....and you wont even know it...

    Vacuum gauges are everywhere for $15 ~ $20..... 62637_zzz_500.jpg

If you had someone else do the rebuild, they need to check their work while still under warranty. It may be minor or it may be something they screwed up that may end up being very expensive. Lots of gas in the oil with fuel injection is a BAD thing, you may have a injector dumping a ton of excessive fuel for some reason.

Update.... I'm an idiot.... I found out that I flooded the engine because the ground wire for the coils wasn't all the way tight. Had to add a washer. Downside is the break in oil still kinda smells like gas but nowhere as bad. Going to assume that there was still a hint of gas left over from the last time.

As for the noises, once again I'm an idiot, the fan wasn't tighten down all the way. That's that.

Now the last bits...It OCCASIONALLY misfires. Theory on that is the new coils I bought are crap. Or a vacuum leak, seeing as how the majority of the lines are probably from 2000, I wouldn't be too surprised.

Side note, the engine is out of a 2000 Tacoma with 400k on the dash.

On mine about a year after the engine was put in, I found a few bolts on accessory items on and around the engine had worked loose. My pulley bracket for power steer belt...had three bolts holding that bracket on the front on the engine that were all loose, one of them was hanging by a couple threads.

This thread reminds me that its about time to check all those again...
That and its time to eyeball the suspension.....I had the bellows pop off the passenger side tierod about a year ago too....fortunately I caught early enough....

Good lesson is to recheck anything major done maybe 6 and 12 months out from the work...and annual inspections after that..

Yeah it looks like they left those three bolts loose when they put mine back together...

and that was a very well-seasoned professional mechanic crew that does about a hundred swaps and engine tear in's a year....

most of them asian vehicles......and most of them Toyotas...

that missing / late delay in getting the oil cannister bracket and parts....must of threw them off...
it happens..........could of been the Corona too...

I got a few bolts loose/missing in me......so I'm damn sure not gonna rebuild an engine myself........that would be stupid....

Have any of you guys taken the gas tank out, and then put it in correctly. Thats an unreal job full of misery.

Not if you cut a hatch thru the bed...just big enough to get the pump assembly out...
    just right above....

then silicone that cut-out back shut with a super thick piece of plastic cut out from an old radiator overflow reservoir...
    ....and cover with your toolbox...

made it nice with I went back in later on ....and replaced all those rubber fuel and vent hoses...

takes about 10 min with an angle grinder....
might want to insulate the pump top with heavy duty Rynolds foil....
your know because of the sparks....

I have a Rino bed....so no plastic liner on mine...

One of several 'Nuclear options' I've developed/learned from co workers with old pickups...over the years...

So I can swap a fuel pump out...in maybe 20mins...tops....
well the silicone needs to dry overnite..
