We share the same windshield as a 2005 taco and they had the same issues with rock chips since day one. Good luck getting a replacement for free. Steep angles on windshields mean cracks, ask an FJ or JK owner.

That is not true, Toyota bragged up the 3rd Gen Windshield to be thicker and have some noise control layer, it may be the same shape and size as 2nd Gen though.

The shape and angle are the important factors, but likely they have slightly different construction over the years.

Got two chips/cracks filled already by safelite. Both happened with less than 800 miles on the odometer. I vote cheap glass as well. I still have my 1990 Celica (daily driven) with the original windshield still.

I bought mine with a chipped windshield that occurred during a dealer trade. (dealer paid no charge to me).

Coming from a 2000 XJ with original glass and having a wrangler in the driveway as well it does sound like the glass is abnormally brittle. Crossing my fingers my new windshield says nice for a while. Over $800 for the dealer to put new OEM glass in. :fingerscrossed:

my 2011 trd sport I traded in on this one was like that, anything that came up
near the windshield cracked it. I went through 3 replacements and 4 repairs
before trading up to the 3rd gen.

I go threw about 2 windshields a year average. They crack or get so sand pitted I have them replace. I have 0 deductible glass coverage.

Didn't clear my hood and a huge sheet of snow/ice 2 inches thick came off at 40 and smashed hard into the windshield. Not a scratch or crack and it's been 6 weeks now. Windshield is tough IMO.

I must have balanced out the statistics. Three windshields and two chip repairs over 60k miles. Not a glass quality problem - a vertical windscreen design and lots of gravel roads nearby problem.

My Tacoma has shrugged a few rocks to the windshield so far that the FJ would have cracked on.

I had 2 massive cracks on 2 different windshields on my 2016 trd sport. We'll see if I have better luck with my 2017.

Maybe it's not, maybe Toyota's soundproofing technology makes them too fragile.

As someone who has worked in the car business for 8 years, you guys have no idea how many windshields on brand new cars have been replaced lol. Its not just a Toyota thing, although I was with Toyota for years. I was also with BMW, Hyundai, Subaru, and Honda. Even the BMWs need windshield replacement from an unlucky rock chip, only difference is they're like 3x the price.

We replace at least 2-3 windshields a month just from chips/cracks picked up from test drives and dealer trades. And we also get a few customers every month coming in shocked that we won't replace their cracked windshield under warranty, from Hyundais to BMWs they always try to blame the glass lol.

I've had my windshield replaced several times on multiple vehicles, I've also picked up nails and needed to replace tires, broken axles, ripped tires off their beads, jammed my transmission in park, and even set off the side airbags without actually rolling the vehicle. Not one of these times did I think to blame the manufacturer or even ask to have it covered for free, yet every day on here there seems to be a new thread with people feeling entitled when their truck isn't magically bulletproof. Like last week the guy buried his truck in sand and physically ripped off his actuator (which I've actually done something very similar to my 2nd gen) and lot of people were going crazy about how Toyota should eat the costs and crawl control broke his truck lol.

The third gen seems to be attracting a new breed of owner, I feel like I'm back in my Subaru days lol (for anyone that doesn't know Subaru customers have a certain how should I say.... reputation).

I've had to fill a star crack on mine, luckily I caught it early and it didn't grow. I do notice quite a few other small rock chips in the window (just small divots).

I don't know what to say, I had my last truck for over ten years and only had one crack. This one already has a bunch of small pelts and has had one crack all in less than a year.

Its not my biggest concern, but I did notice that the windshield was showing signs of damage a lot easier than what I was used to.

Ya know whats funny is that reputation is no accident, Subaru was the first mainstream vehicle manufacturer to directly market to the LGBT demographic. They essentially single handedly brought LGBT advertising to the mainstream, before Subarus direct marketing in the 90s LGBT marketing was really only seen in fashion.

I agree with the majority on this issue, and I also am not very impressed with this new "sound deadening glass". Upon taking delivery of my truck I noticed what I thought was bug guts, actually turned out to be a small chip in the windshield right in my line of view. While driving to work Saturday morning before last, and staring at the small chip that has now started to annoy me, low and behold a small object comes off a road ranger truck in the lane next to me and hits the driver side of my windshield causing a dime size crack. That quickly turned into a "S" shaped cracked going half way across the windshield. Had the windshield replaced this past Friday to just turn around and take another hit to the windshield in almost the exact same stretch of highway where I got the crack. Fortunately this hit only caused another small chip like what it had when I took delivery of the truck, but still!?!?

I guess the majority of my aggravation on this comes from the fact that my CTS has taken multiple hits to the windshield and has yet to even suffer a chip. My 4 runner took a few good hits in the time I owned it and I never had an issue there either. Same story for the more than I care to mention amount of other vehicles I've had the pleasure of owning in my life time, but here I am with a brand new truck that has less than 2200 miles on it and I feel like I can't even leave my house without worry of the windshield getting broken. I truly feel that with amount of people having similar issues (major damage from little contact) Toyota really needs to reevaluate the impact resistance of this glass and consider an upgrade.

After owning an FJ, I feel like breaking a windshield is just a right of passage when owning a Toyota.

Tacoma windshield, so far, so good.:fingerscrossed:

Spoken like a man who lives in the middle of no where.

You increase following distance where I live, and a car will quickly take up that space.
