The lens looks the same but not the rest. The bezel is huge on the new one.

They don’t replace the light, they run silicone around it and slap that bezel on. At least that’s my understanding as long as they don’t find a leak.
If you don’t have a leak and take it in that’s what it’s going to look like when you get it back.

Not the most attractive thing but I’d rather have that than mold growing inside.

I mean, I think it looks good (I actually like it better than the naked light), but I cant believe that was their solution.

I think that by fixating on it you draw your eyes on it, but if you don’t it’s not terrible. I agree though, not the best engineering going on there. Weren’t they fixing these with thicker and thicker gaskets for awhile? I would also think that it’s less noticeable on a dark color than on a lighter one for sure. Oh well what’s done is done.

Took the truck in for service and they did this same day. I like the way it looks now vs old.

I’m pretty sure the pdf was floating around that showed steps taken (rephrase- steps that should be followed/taken). But it’s no different than their tss water intrusion “fix” which was 3m foam tape covering the entire top and back of the sensor. Both these fixes seem silly to me but I’m not surprised by much these days anymore

    image.jpg

edit: oh I’d much rather them give me the new version 3rd brake light with updated gasket and allow me to install but since that won’t happen and I can’t trust my truck will not come back with some scratch (wheels/headlight), gouge/ding(wheels), floppy front bumper(broken clips) which has all happened then I sure as shit won’t let them pull the headliner and panels to add more broken clips and a new one… rattles to the list :annoyed: I’d much rather them do a piss poor job on the trim piece that’s on the roof and for me hidden by the bed cap

Mine was done today. Not sure if I got “taken” but they said I had to purchase the new light assembly. I noticed water dripping in during a very hard car wash. I placed my hand on light and noticed it felt a little “loose”…I considered dropping headliner but decided against it. I read….as did the Toyota rep on the phone…first try a gasket then a new light with new gasket. Dealership said there was something wrong with light in there, even questioned if I had done any work to it. I ended up paying for a new light, got the new gasket and free install. No water damage or mold found. They are going to “attempt” to get it covered and I’ll be refunded…I don’t think this will happen. I even asked for and was presented the old light. It had a broken tab where it is secured but I am not 100% if it was that way or done during removal. It was only $147 out the door.

my truck is a 2016…your results may vary.

I drop off my Tacoma tomorrow at the dealership, as I previously stated, it hasn't really been driving for about 6 months. in removing my stuff from my truck, there's legit stuff growing in the truck.

    2021-09-29 20.22.51.jpg 2021-09-29 20.22.32.jpg

It recently rained, so I went out there to see what was going on, sure enough, all the water was coming right in through the third tail light.

I had my seats pulled forward so it wouldn't go into the seats, here's what that looked like-

There are multiple electrical issues now. The AC won't turn off, and my LCD screen is all messed up.

The dealership I have used for years, the service manager said they have done several light recalls but have never had the 3rd light leak come in for repair. Getting mine done with the oil and tire rotation in a few weeks. I'm not crazy about the new trim piece but I think it looks better in person on the one I saw yesterday.

I don't drive my '17 often but it's kept outside. Walking by it, I noticed the windows were totally fogged. Opening the door, the interior smelled incredibly bad. Water behind the rear seats, carpet soaked. Read here about the third brake light seal problem. Entered VIN in the recall site and saw there was a program. Made appointment with the dealer, dropped it off, got it back 25 days later. Service writer says everything but the steering wheel and dash was removed. Dry ice was placed on the seam sealer, then broken up and removed. A mold mitigation company treated everything but the padding and carpet were replaced. Seats and door cards are now as clean as new. There's a bit of a lingering disinfectant smell (I've only had it back 5 days) but it is diminishing. They told me this was their first Tacoma with the mold problem.

Wow that is nasty. I would shit if I saw that in my new Taco. I will definitely check it out today to see cause we have gotten a lot of rain up here this year. I never noticed any water lines on the back window when it does rain maybe the water runs on each side of the window.

You guys should immediately call Toyota and insist that they fix their website for listing this service campaign under “recalls for your vehicle..” because they are WRONG!

None taken. I agree it's odd that it's been ignored up here, but hardly surprising. I haven't checked in with a local dealership just yet; no leaks since repairing it over a year ago.
