Looking at that list of recalls from Toyota is a scary thought, although my 4.0 is unaffected.
Makes me feel like something will just come up down the line

Idk...I see the difference between Toyota and the other auto manufacturers is that Toyota will issue a recall, whereas other manufacturers will call it routine maintainence.

If this happened to a Chevy for example, they would be quick to blame the driver saying it was driven too hard, leaving the driver hanging. I remember a thread recently where a 2014 Silverado LTZ was dead at like 50 miles, and Chevy basically told him that they didn't know what was wrong with it, but it wasn't covered by warranty. Basically a 40-50k truck...good for nothing more than a paperweight.

We all know Nissan has forever had problems with cross contamination of fluids....but they refuse to acknowledge it...

For some reason jeeps keep catching on fire...haven't seen that in the news...actually got to help pull a family out of one that had about 14,000 on it...

Part of the reason that I have stuck with Toyota is that they take responsibility when they make a mistake. And just like anything that is mass produced, there are going to be mistakes made...

In '89 I bought a new Toyota pickup with the new 3.0 V6. A great truck. In '94 it started leaking coolant. I had 96000 on the OD. The head gaskets failed and it cost me over $1K to fix it. In '95 a recall came out for 3.0 V6 head gaskets and I contacted Toyota. At the time I had 99K on the engine and Toyota paid for everything, $1200 worth. That was then. I don't know what they would do now? When I sold it the truck was as solid as the day I bought it. My '97 was the same. I have a 2008 now and it sounds like a bucket of bolts but the 4.0 engine is solid and runs like a top. I guess you can't have everything.....like before.

Talked to the dealer today when I took mine in for the 6 month service-they knew nothing about it (usual). He did say that they will probably send out letters when they have a big inventory of valve springs.

I may well be included in the recall. Can someone educate me as to what is involved in swapping out valve springs?

Cams and lifters have to come out, for one. Can they be safely changed with the head on the block? I've heard rumors of people in the Honda world changing out valve aprings and retainers without pulling the head, by setting the crank at #1 TDC and doing 1 and 4, then rotating 180 degrees and doing 2 and 3 (pistons at top = valves can't fall), but I've never had the honor myself

Remove head. Remove cam. Remove spring retainers. Remove springs, repeat in reverse with specific torquing procedures and such. O, and you have to remove a bunch of random stuff on the top of the engine. Oversimplified, but you get the gist. Not overly difficult, just time consuming.

They have indicated that those who have paid to have their spiral cables replaced will be compensated.

Compressed air in the cylinder to hold the valves closed.

I've seen guys run the piston to nearly TDC, then feed rope into the spark plug hole, then move the piston into it.

Damn....all that internal re-do work sort of ruins the factory built karma of the engine. Thanks for the education on what's involved with the recall repair.

    I agree.
Same with the early 5.7 engines that were breaking camshafts.

Once a dealer tech pulls the intake manifold, I look at a vehicle as being less "new" than after its first minor accident.

It was factory built karma that got them into the mess in the first place. :p

I found the attached Toyota FAQ regarding the nature of the valve springs recall.
Hopefully this will be useful to someone on here.

My 2013 was built in July, 2013 so I fully expect to receive a notice from Toyota about this recall.

Thanks for valve spring FAQ. Mine was purchased in late April so looks like it's no problem for me ( hopefully),

^Build date (shown on the doorjamb sticker) obviously precedes purchase date, so you are in the clear.

If you got a good deal, chances are the truck sat on the dealer's lot for a while. Mine was purchased in May, but built in Jan.

    Sounds like my bike.
I bought it in May, but the dealer took delivery in November.

I bought my '03 Tundra when it still had the white plastic on the hood.

Bought it 11/3/02, build date was 10/9/02
Less than a month from the production line to my driveway.
And I skated in a week after the new front brakes hit the line so the brake TSB didn't impact me... I traded the truck 2 weeks before I got my ball joint recall notice in September 2005.
