i recently purchased a 2002 TRD Off Road 3.4 MT with 144k for $8500. Everything works flawlessly, but then I discovered something I missed while buying it, frame rust by the passenger leaf spring mount. Toyota is calling me back Monday to discuss options with me, but do shops repair issues like these?

I've heard of a few members that had their frame welded and repaired. But I think it's pricey. But yes, there are shops out there willing to do it.

Being a 2002 though, your frame recall should last up until 2017.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

The truck was sprayed for rust, so I have a good chance of a new frame. Mainly just don't want to be without my truck for months.

Like you said, your chances are pretty high. But hey, a new frame is totally worth the months without your baby. If your planning to change some part, like suspension, go for it and enjoy free labour.

True. They won't change any fluids, correct? Planning on change most if not all fluids in the truck, but don't want to if they're going to

Sounds like you hit the jack pot man. I'm not well read on their policies but it sounds like worst case scenario you get a new frame and best you get a fat check for a few grand over what you just spend on the truck.

Yeah, only aggravating part is that I'm 20 so I'm not sure how/if a rental car will work out.

Loaners are covered through the dealer I assume. If they can't get you a rental you should ask for one of their certified pre-owned rigs with dealer plates.

Hopefully they work with you, they should. There might be a couple of hurdles though depending if the previous owner had the truck coated and where the truck is from.
The recall was for trucks sold in certain "cold weather" states where de-icing salt and other chemicals are used.
Where are you from? Did you happen to buy it from the orignal owner?
You can ask the dealer or go online and register at Toyota and check the vin also.
Keep us posted, sucks cause it's a sweet looking truck!

I didn't buy it from the original owner, but the truck was originally from Ohio.

I'm keeping the truck one way or another. Hopefully Toyota will work with me, but if not I'll take it to a frame repair shop. Absolutely love the truck.

When Toyota bought my 99 back for way (and I mean WAY) more than what I could have traded /sold it for they earned a lifetime fanboy customer lol

%150 of the high book value plus $1000 incentive to buy another Toyota if I recall correctly

In hindsight I think I would rather be rolling in a cherry 1st gen with a new frame lol

Quick update: Just got home from a weekend trip and decided to give the frame another good look. I've decided I don't feel comfortable driving the truck. I can push on the bottom of the frame where it's rusted through and visibly see the frame moving. The truck is gonna sit in my yard until Toyota tells me to take it to get inspected.

I had the frame replaced on my 04 Dcab. The dealer provided me a loaner mini van for a month. Everything went very seemless.

Ok so Ohio is on the shit list, that's good. Now hopefully one of the previous owners paid attention to the notice from Toyota and had the anti corrosion spray done. If they did, it's covered 15 years past the "in service date". Which would cover you until 2017 POSSIBLY earlier depending on build date.
If they didn't, you're not gonna be happy...did you get it from a dealer or private party?

Private property. The truck was sprayed (at least that's what Toyota told me on the phone)
