Speaking from experience by just going through this, you can pretty much make this a DIY project with nothing but rental tools from your auto parts store. I rented manifold set and the vacuum pump from the store, and did the whole vacuum, hold, charge deal in a couple of hours. I did start with a vented system, so I did not need to evacuate the system, if you do have a charged system, please do the right thing and don't vent to atmosphere, have somebody do it for you that is licensed or at least knows what they're doing.

Second thing, if you are going to do this a DIY thing, read up a little bit on how to operate the manifold. The last thing you want is to introduce charge through the high side, and blow your hand up.

I worked as an on call helper for my friend doing commercial HVAC work for 2 years. One thing I learned is to run the A/C for at least 20 minutes a month year round. This will help seals from drying out causing Freon leaks.
