I agree with this^ but mine it pretty airtight and my ears feel the pressure when fan is on, and say I roll up the windows. right as they close I def feel pressure spike in my ears (not much but enough)

    however

stinky diesels and everything else B-GON! as soon as I turn on recirc. I find no issues with my tacoma blocking stank from outside.

*I do know the difference that the first whiff of stank diesel can linger in my nostrils, making me think it is still in the car...so I often look ahead for big trucks or old model cars (or cars with dirty rear ends) and preemptively smack recirc

    A lot of stuff.
My 2014 is pretty sealed up with NO outside fumes coming into the cab on recirculate.
I can definitely hear a change in fan speed when system is changed to recirculate.

You should consider rolling up the windows next time you smell the outside diesel smells.

Something only smokers would know about... If you smoke in the vehicle only while moving AND you have the window cracked several inches AND you direct the smoke toward the window opening AND you do NOT have it on recirculate, most of the smoke will be drawn right out the window pretty quickly. You can see it clearly. Turn recirc on and the draw is not there and the smoke will linger inside too long. You also have to remember to cease any smoking and continue to purge for sometime before parking.

I apply the same principle to any kind of odor that may be inside.

More than likely what you are hearing is when the system is turned on to recirculate, the fan is exposed to the inside of the cabin, thus you can hear the fan more. Works even on my old school 1st gen. Now I may be wrong, since I am not there, but if you switch the AC on any vehicle you can hear the fan louder because of this.

Really? That's your answer? I'm sure you think you're smarter than the average bear but alloweth me shatter thy bubble: there is no connection between fresh air flapper position and fan speed. And, had you read (or comprehended) any previous part of this discussion, you would know that window position was not the issue.

My fan blows harder on recirc too. I figured it had to do with a vacuum effect being made near the fan because of all the air being forced out. This would creat a low pressure area where the fan is blowing since moving fluid is less dense than stationary fluid, and also air entering the fan already has a run and go from being blown. But i could be crazy

It actually decreases in pressure but would be the same results as if it where less dense. Bernoulli priciple.

Okay, this is silly. There's no major science at work here. Setting your flapper to draw interior air does not direct any additional voltage to the fan motor. If you hear more noise, its due to the passageways thru which that air is moving. It makes more noise when drawn from inside the car due to the change in location of the input.

People who think this isn't an important issue probably couldn't smell a wastewater treatment plant due to their olfactory being devastated by their fabric softener, deodorant, cologne, mouthwash, glade plug-ins and little trees. To you I say, enjoy your cancer.

The question is about how well the truck's fresh air flap seals. Apparently not well as some vehicles do better than others. Even if "the law" specifies a certain percentage...I'll be looking for one that's at the lower end of the range, thank you.

It looks like they'll have to change the law you just stated.

    I'm with Bill's percentages :)

I noticed this with the 03 Solara I had before the Tacoma, I also get it with the Tacoma. Localhost is right, hitting recirc preemptively is the most effective solution. Once it gets in, the only option I've found is to get away from the source of the smell and let the cab clear out.

Remove the plastic piece below the windshield on the passenger side. The opening is under there.

The recirculate function in my 2014 TRD Sport seems to always be on when the AC is initially switched on - Like it is the "Default" setting or something. And the air flow from the vents is significantly stronger and cooler in the recirculate mode. The air only smells like the outside environment when the recirculate function is off...
