Recommend me a reman caliper

Boots are intact. No leakage either. Fresh fluid from 6 months ago when my drivers side seized and I replaced that one.

 

Shitty caliper.

 

What would you deem as maintenance? I visually inspect and clean at least every 4-6 months... Alot more often in the summer.

 

This is what I'm guessing but would like to have as much input/info as possible to correct anything I may be doing wrong.

Tacoma calipers are simple. Grease the slide pins and the back of the pads. Sand the rust off the hubs to make a smooth mating surface between the rotor and the hub and torque the wheels to spec.

 

how about drums? what do i look for? how do i know when to change, im learning to take better care of my truck day by day

Napa, Cardone, blah blah blah. They're all rebuilt in some third world country (not that there's anything wrong with that). My only advice is get them from a place that is close by, well stocked and has a warranty! It is hit or miss..

 

I did just that. They lasted 2 months past the warranty.

 

Napa calipers are awesome, they are powder coated so they dont rust and they have always worked great for me when ive used them.

I had the same problem as you. Got a reman one off rock auto. Painted it. Seized in less than a year. Went and got Napa lifetime (so if it happens again I just go get a new one no questions asked) black powder coated calipers and they’ve survived two northeast winters. Holding them in hand you can see they’re much better made.

 

Shoe wear and might as well do the rebuild kit (a bunch of springs) apperantly they last very close to forever.

There are huge differences between nessecary and good practice. Is it nessecary to lube (rust protect) a brand new piston in a caliper with a brand new perfect boot? No not nessecary. But a good practice. I am talking literally wiping the piston as if you were greasing a muffin pan. No extra globs but enough to give a coating which is mostly wiped by the seal leaving a mostly insignificant ring of lube at the base of the piston and seal. In doing so I get a chance to inspect the parts for issues while brand new which is also good practice on any new parts.

When you speak of maintenance that is another good time to inspect the boots and pull them back to check for rust on the piston. We tend to power wash everything including rims which can push water past the boot and guess what? I hate power washers as they do a shit ton of damage down the road.

Now as far as good and bad reman anything. I would have to see what is considered the quality part vs the inferior part side by side and have someone explain the differences. I have bought reman calipers and watched as the guy pulled parts and assembled them in front of me. This was one of the suppliers for just about every local parts store in the province. I have also rebuilt calipers a number of times myself (motorcycle). Unless the piston has rough machining or some other defect or the seals are inferior quality or simply you got a bad core that slipped past QC and shouldn’t have been rebuilt in the first place I am not sure what is meant by bad reman parts. Any part new or rebuilt / reman can be defective right out of the box.

 

So this, I do. When I installed them I figured it won't hurt to lay a nice film of grease along the outside of the boot and coat the piston on the brim and inside the hollow. As for the remanufacture of a part I think you answered your own question with all the variables you listed. Those are the things that can go wrong with a reman part. I would imagine it happens more in some companies and less in others depending on the employer, employees and a host of other factors. I don't think looking at them you would know. Totally agree with the power washer remark and that is something I will be taking into account in the future. Thanks bud.
