Coating the inside of the “hollow” is unnessecary. Nothing slides or makes contact. Is is hollow for weight savings / cost. I mean pull the piston part way out and coat the outside of the piston between the ring groove area where the boot sits. The idea is when the piston moves out some lube will coat the slidling area of the outside of the piston. That way it will help prevent rust IF the boot tears and before your maintenance catches and replaces the boot. Then when you replace pads next you don’t tear the seals when pushing the piston in due to the rust. Even a light coat of silicone spray helps. Too much or reg grease and it will coat the pad or rotor (possibly).

Once again not nessecary but when your piston is rusted and you tore up your seals because of it you will wonder if this could have helped. Caliper pin grease only or silicone spray.

Realized I cant drive anywhere it was so bad so I called around to find the closest Napa had closed and the next closest one was 40 minutes out. Partsource is 7 minutes. Cardone once again....
@Exracer2 you were correct in pulling the boot back to grease it.

This is what I found once I removed the boots. Boots were in very good condition.

So this is what I did to prevent future fuckerry
    IMG_20180410_102736.jpg
Peeled it back and smeared brake lub all around the inside of the boot.
It made so much sense I decided to pull the other side and do the same
    IMG_20180410_114358.jpg
My question is now is there a chance of cross contamination into the brake fluid as the piston moves and spreads the grease?

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
I got both from AutoZone and they work great, but as many noted they rust instantly. When I did my 4runner I clear coated them and they remain shiny. Finally pulled the wheels on my Taco again, sanded off the rust and clear coated them. Rust stopped. You can buy some with rust protection but they are 3-4x more.

That's nice to hear as i just installed one this past weekend. I was rather surprised to see it come with pins, clips, and a spring.

They also sell a fully loaded caliper as well. But I choose my pads separate from calipers but they do have that option to buy a fully loaded caliper

I think all remanufactured calipers come with clips, slide pins and springs.

    Sometimes I hate being right.....

The reason I don’t do the inside of the cup is that is only aesthetic. But if the grease (high temp) does melt it can get onto the pads or rotors. At least if you lightly coat the outside of the piston and have good boots it should stay where it is and you use such a small amount of caliper grease that any contamination will be extremely minimal. If it does leak to the pads or rotors you have other issues at that point anyway. Now if you have old fluid and did not flush the system that can be your cause of water rusting the cup. Brake fluid is very susceptible to absorbing water. That is why you never keep old brake fluid that has been opened for long. It would need to be very contaminated and you might notice fluid boiling before that (my experience is race motorcycles and you might not identify or notice it on the street in your truck).

Now as far as contamination because of the grease I will do my best to explain why it shouldn’t be an issue. Think about what a caliper does. It holds fluid on one side and keeps air from intruding on the other side. Think about the air part of this for a second. I HAVE had a seal failure where the seals hold fluid but air gets pulled into the fluid on the retraction. It is a rare occurrence but it can happen. Either fluid or air passing the seals means they need replacement. Now any grease that does get pulled in past the seals will have to be impregnated into the metal of the cup and pass those seals that hold both air and fluid from passing from one side to the other. For contamination of any value it then would have to then mix with the brake fluid. Think about how little grease would pass if any considering fluid and air can’t pass the seals. Make sense?
