Recommend mods for easy/moderate off roading

Hey folks -

I purchased a TRD Off Road this past summer (inferno) - it's been a great adventure mobile and me and the wife have gone off roading a number of times - are there any recommended mods I should have for easy/moderate terrain, e.g sliders, additional underside protection, etc? I have no interest in pushing the limits of the truck (or my skills) and mostly use it for getting to peaks for camping.

Tires are the low hanging fruit. Increased traction and clearance.

 

For easy/moderate, don't necessarily need to do anything to truck as it is reasonably capable stock. Next steps/level would be better tires, some basic recovery equipment (snatch strap, high-lift, shovel, etc), then on to skids/sliders/etc. Get out an enjoy the truck/outdoors.

For easy off roading start cheap and see what gives you issues from there.

 

Some more off road oriented tires are really all you need. I’m not sure if you have a locker or not but either way some 265/75r16 tires will help you get places the factory tires can’t.

 

Another vote for traction boards.

Then self recovery.

Then recovery points + straps for if someone needs to rescue you.

 

None. Stock OR is perfect for easy/moderate off roading. Save your money

Yep I have a locker - I'll start searching for some 265/75r16's - thanks!

 

My stock tires did ok with that stuff. It did get slick at times. I could still make it through fine.

But I finally got duratracs on there and I just walk through everything.

 

It really depends. What you consider moderate, someone else may consider hard and someone else may think is a Sunday drive. Your best bet is to get in with people in your area that have been on the roads and trails you want to run and see what they recommend. The Tacoma Offroad is a fairly capable rig, but it does have it's short comings. The tires are a little less than desirable. Personally that's where and what I did start with. A good all terrain 265 will help immensely. Mud tires are cool looking and can be the perfect tire depending on what your doing, but for a daily driver that see's mostly pavement then I would stick with an all terrain. Beyond tires it's really going to be up to you. Once you get out there, your going to figure out what you need and in what order fairly quickly. Have fun and post pictures.... We like pictures.

 

Add some decent all-terrain tires and I'll agree with you... the stock Goodyears are shit off-road.

 

Yeah I suppose. I took the stock tires to Hollister SVRA and it did okay for the green and blue routes..

 

I think OP should go around offroad trails and be more concientious about the trails. Nobody in the internet would know what trails you go into and recommend what is needed for said trail.

 

Yeah. They're not the best on anything slick at all. And they're straight nail magnets .haha

 

Really happy with my toyo open country at 2's pretty quiet on road and decently grippy off road. Quite a bit stiffer ride than the stock but I also went with the LT E rated version not the P rateds so that part was expected. Lots of folks like the wildpeak AT3's as well
