Without the bed mat, stuff slides around and slams into the sides of the bed. I learned this when I had a 70 pound toolbox slam into the front of the bed just driving around my block casually. Boom bam! Yikes!

ya maybe ideally everything should be strapped down, but that is not always practical and it’s also harder to strap stuff down if you have a slippery bed floor.

There are times when slippery has an advantage, like when trying to slide something heavy into the bed.

Clean the area around the hole with rubbing alcohol and put some gorilla tape over them.

I used interior Christmas tree clips. I have a softopper and I didn't like the idea of water/salt/debris coming up through the bottom. Thinking back that probably won't happend but I had the plugs in my garage so I put them in.

Let's see...1000 pound capacity, water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon, 1000/8.3 = about 120 gallons, 120 Gallons = about 0.6 cubic yards which should come up to about 3/4 the height of the bed rails. Yeah sounds feasible.

Beds are for stuff, stuff is dirty, bed gets dirty, stuff gets removed, bed gets swept. Don't wash your bed, it adds character

Until the point the holes in my bed are so big that I’m losing kids through them I don’t bother to plug them.

OP, what do you use your bed for and do you have a cover of some sort? If you want your bed to be sealed from the elements, you will need to do more work than sealing those holes. There are several places were water and gunk can get into the bed. If google you should be able to find some tips on sealing it up.

Man, the dumbgeon is really running loose in this thread.

I used plugs from a firewall plug hole kit.

I plugged the holes because they were letting so much dust into my topper. Fine, silty dust was all over my camping stuff in the shell.

Don't over think it if that's why you want to plug them. I cleaned the surface and covered them with plain electrical tape 2 years ago. Still holding strong.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
I'd wager that a lot of that came in thru the poorly sealed side cubbies.
