There are tons of things like that, old outdated systems that refuse to be improve because all the other companies are also not improving. It would only take 1 company to come out with a high end android based system to change the whole market place. If sony released a android based system, installed their own skin on it and then removed the app store and replaced it with their own app store. They could control the apps you use while still offering a full android based radio (pretty much what Amazon did with the kindle)

True, not all china brands just want to move units, I too have a joying unit in my truck and I love it. Though I do think they could of stepped up on the quality and some of their preinstalled software. They could of used a better display, a better audio decoder, and better materials.

If I were to make my own android based unit:
    active cooling
    hi-resolution screen
    more input/output options
    stock android (no overlays)
    customizable radio software
    standalone canbus decoder software
    more usb ports
    internal sd card slots
    high end audio decoder chips
rear headrest support (play something on headrests while having radio/music on headunit)

Speaking of headrest monitors, have you ever looked at them? they have not evolved in years! there is still no bluray support only dvd, they are just now coming out with hdmi inputs over coax inputs, 480p screen resolution. The biggest thing keeping me from getting headrest monitors for my kids is that all the units are garbage with very little for input options. The ones that do have hdmi ports have them on the side of the headrest so you have a cable sticking out the side.

    Perfectly explained.

Have you checked XDA for ROM sources? You've convinced me that this is a better option than fully custom, but there are always 2+ things that aren't quite ideal and well as long as I have the source...

    Edit:https://forum.xda-developers.com/an.../rom-gtx-joying-stock-rom-2018-01-29-t3742482

That's an older ROM for the Joying HU, but it probably leads to the current (8.1 Oreo) build, and an inevitable Pie build.

Faster boot, better resource utilization, the works.

    Sold!

Just did a test fit for the Sony AX8000 now... should work great. Going to get it mounted and installed tomorrow. Will require some custom work to make work properly and securely if I want it flush to the dash.. Will try to document it once done.

Sony still looks like its stuck in the early 90s.... but I actually really like how that looks.

lol, well- all my favorite car audio memories are from the late 90's and early 2000's... I still have a Sony CDX-C910 sitting around here somewhere. I actually really like the final fit- its flush against the dash... unlike the alpine halo9 which sticks way out there.

ill post some better pictures tomorrow.

Please let us know if the steering controls and back up camera work properly with this unit. Thank you.

I still have my sony MDX-c800rec in my basement. It was a mini disc player that could record off the radio. I also have like 20 discs full of radio from 2002. I loved sony over pretty much every brand because at the time, they had not sold out to flashing blue lights on everything.

All works well. I had an idatalink maestro RR in the vehicle from my Alpine ILX-107, flashed it to the Sony AX5000 (8000 isn't an option yet on the Maestro site) and all seems to work.

Would you mind posting a video of running through the functions and operation in the Tacoma? Cool if you don't, just thought I'd ask. Are you using an android or apple device?

Late to the party but don't suppose this dream is any closer to realization? I hadn't considered using Linux but I like that better; my idea involved a Raspberry Pi and homemade software.

Nah, still using the stock head. Other priorities/inertial paralysis. An RPi is a good choice. Just give it a fan for hot days.

After seeing your idea, I don't know if I can go back. Might as well go the whole nine yards.

Pay close attention to where it ships from seeing that these are Chinese head units. Unless of course, you are ok waiting 8-12 (+/-) weeks.

I have a 2017 with the JBL. It seems I would need a dash kit. I also dont want to lose my SAT radio. I keep looking for the perfect radio to replace mine, but just cant seem to find one I like.
