Time to change the oil on my new to me Tacoma.

What weight do you recommend? Also, should I go full synthetic?

    Thanks!

My owners manual and oil fill cap both call for 0-20w synthetic on my '13.

    What does yours say?

Straight 30 weight...just kidding what does your manual say? That's probably a good choice. Good luck

Yeah, the manual says one thing, but I wanted to see if there was something better.

    Thanks!

5W-20, full synthetic seems to be most popular choice for this engine.

I wont buy oil unless it has at least 50% Unicorn in it. Just not the same when rainbows aren't comeing out of the back of my truck.

I would use what is specified in the manual over what a bunch of people on an Internet forum say...just sayin'.

What the manual says in synthetic, unless you like changing the oil more often, then dino.

I've been using Mobil One fully synthetic motor oil on my 2008 since I first purchased it brand new off the lot back in April of 2008.
My Tacoma is coming up on 10 years and currently has well over 200K miles on it and still running strong! (Thank God!)

I'd highly recommend to go with the exact weight of oil that your owners manual says to use and only that-nothing else.

Your brave for doing that.....I have to hand it to you....yes you are definitely brave in "trusting".... and allowing the dealer to change your oil.

There's no way.....NO WAY....that I would let the dealer or any other fast lube place change the oil on my vehicle.

I've seen for myself and have heard stories of horrible happenings when allowing others to change the oil on a vehicle. Everything from not actually changing the oil, not changing the oil filter, forgetting to put the engine oil cap back on, not tightening the oil pan plug, not putting in enough oil, the incorrect amount or the incorrect weight type, etc., etc.

I'd say you've been riding on pure luck for the last two years.

Your absolutely right though to "trust the recommendation on the engine manufacturer". Who else knows the engine better and what's best for it than the engineer's that designed it.

dealers and jiffy lubes do millions of oil changes every year. you are bound to have a screw up here and there. we won't mention the shade tree mechanic that drains the transmission fluid when trying to change their oil.....

I'm one of those weirdos that goes against my manual's recommendation for 0w20. I tow a lot, haul a lot, and spend lots of time in the mountains floored above 4,000rpm. I feel better running 5w-30 (basic Mobil 1) in these circumstances.

I've got differents cars with differents oil recommendation. So when I see some deals on oil, I buy a few fallons for each differents cars in advance. A few weeks ago, after I drained the oil and put the filter on, I did'nt found the gallons I've bought for my Tacoma 2,7 litres. So it's summer and hot, I took a chance with some 5w40 for europeans diesel just that once. And to my surprise with my 300 000 km engine, it does really sounds better. I'm kind of tempted to it again, but I wont. We forget that in those years , alot of cars companies decided to gives directions for lighter weight oil concerning gas economy range battle between cars and trucks, and probably not as concerning for long terms reliability. But i'm no expert. I lives in Québec where the winters are cold, I will be going back to 0w20 or... maybe trying 0w40 for diesel :) have a great day group. I loves this tacoma group for informations. I had found information for AC delete with a shorter belt and the list up the truck with the 5100 Bilstein shocks with an AAL behind on this forum. Thanks
