    Follow the viscosity recommendations specified in the owner's manual for the next period of temperature ranges you expect to encounter: especially if you are worried about very cold temperatures. If it specifies 5w30 and you expect extreme upcoming temperatures (either hot or cold), use synthetic 5w30.

    I was stuck in accident-caused stop-and-go traffic for 10 miles today, it was in the 90s, a/c cranking, and I never gave the oil status (Mobil1 synthetic 5W30) the slightest thought or worry. I run it year round in temps from -10F to a recent high of +98F.
