i am looking for recommendations on winch and bumper mount for my 2017 tacoma trd. Also would appreciate feedback for the winch as steel cable versus the rope.
    Thankyou for any help.

I run a Warn VR10 off my 2017 with a steel cable. It's pulled me out plenty fine, as well as F150s that I have run with before. Synthetic is safer in strict recovery, though a couple pulls I have made when using it for more work than recovery (pulling trees and other objects) I feel the synthetic rope may have come out more damaged? This is anecdotal and I have no proof either way.

Edit to add: my winch sits in the ARB Summit front bumper. I like the feet forward design on the winch and that ARB has crash/air bag tested their bumpers.

Are you looking for a front hitch mount, a minimalist bumper or a full on steel bumper to mount the winch on?

Do yourself a favor. Get a receiver mounted winch. Put receivers front and rear with the appropriate wiring. When you go off road take the winch out of the garage and put it onto the truck bed.

Storing it in the garage protects it from theft. Storing it in the bed protects it until needed. Having both front and back receivers doubles your pull options.

Honestly the only reason most folks permanently mount a bumper and winch is to look cool. To experienced folks it looks dumb.

Thats a whole bunch of weight mounted forward allowing it much more leverage and stressing your front suspension.

This is my plan. I dont want a winch I may have to rely on spending all winter getting blasted with salt. Yah, pain in the ass when your are bogged in mud and need to hook the thing up. But still better overall.

TBF several of the times I have used mine, sliding a winch on to a front or rear receiver with its basket wouldn't have been very viable. Arguably, maybe I would have have the extra room from the bumper not being there but awkwardly manipulating a #100 winch + basket would have been a nightmare with questionable amount of space in either a muddy slog or awkward landscape. This is not something I am trying to do.

yeah, I’ve seen people doing this. Might be viable for some people in the right circumstances but after watching them fart around in the mud carrying a heavy winch on a receiver plate, that’s not something I’d want any part of. I’ve also not ever heard anyone mention that having a winch on a truck looks dumb, but whatever.

I have a winch on my truck and had them on both jeeps I owned. I used it several times when wheeling but I used it even more rescuing people who got stuck in the snow. Btw I have a SSO slimline with a Warn VR10 winch with synthetic line. If OP is asking about winches, Warn is my choice due to line speed and reliability. I have several friends that use Superwinch, never seen them have issues either. Many others seem to be very similar (Smittybilt, Engo etc) and are probably all built in the same Chinese factory and have slightly different appearances. I prefer synthetic rope as it’s easier to work with and care for. It’s lighter to pull and doesn’t get bound up like steel cable. This of course is at the expense of durability, but take care of your rope and you’ll likely not have any wear issues

Warn vr 10 and the warn semi hidden bumper work for me. Going synthetic and an aluminum hawse will save 10+ pounds.
