Haha no. That’s Spot. He was a stray that earned himself a home with my friend. He’s really sweet. 70# of muscle, but is absolutely the most gentle dog I’ve ever seen. It’s really odd to watch Liz, the little red Aussie in the other pics, completely dominate him. Haha. He doesn’t care though... just wants someone to scratch his belly.

Yes but Carter will build you one for cost. All you gotta do is cut your bedsides and put it on. Bring it to a meet and I'll put it on. Hell bring the material to a meet and I'll build it for you. Haha

Buddy it really is pretty simple. As long as you have a grinder and welder you can do it. Bandsaw and plasma make it easier.

After a mini-sidebar of me wanting to get some bigger nasty tires, we're back on schedule. haha. I have an appointment with a guy to bend some tube for bed hoops in a couple weeks. Yay!!! Need to weld on a couple loops for safety chains.

The next project is going to be gears. My main reason for wanting to make the switch is off-road rather than on (although it will be nice there too). In 4L, my 1st gear is too high when I need to crawl, leading to lots of clutch work. It’s pretty exhausting in the rocks. Likewise, 2nd is too high for those situations where you need speed/momentum. (Think steep, muddy hill climb). It’ll end up bogging down on me.

I am currently trying to decide b/w 4.88 and 5.29. I think 4.88 would be the best "all around" while on 33's. However, My truck doesn't get much "all around" use. I'm either wheeling, or towing, or putting around home, where 55-60 mph is the most it sees. So being over-geared might not be that big of a deal. Plus, 5.29 would allow me to make the swap to 35's if I wanted. I think the 5.29s and 33's would be monstrous off-road, but I want to figure out if it would be bearable on-road. I used this calculator to find this information. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

The above shows RPMs in 5th at different speeds with the different possible gearsets/tire sizes. Top row is stock.

*** For all you 2nd gen fellers, the accepted standard for 1st gens is 4.88 for 33's, and 5.29 for 35's.*** Opinions welcome and wanted.

Ask Monte for some more advice. He has a pretty good handle on gearing and what pros and cons there are for each. But if you really are considering 35's I'd save up and do it all in one sweep. It'd be cheaper but take longer

Good idea! @Blackdawg cate to take a look 2 posts up and see what you think? I know there is an engine discrepancy to consider, but I figure you’ll still have a pretty good nose for it.

Josh, this decision isn’t being made on the possibility of 35s. In all likelyhood it’ll never happen. This thing does so good on 33s. I just don’t want to go through all of this and still be wishing for more gear.

@allmotorrex which set of those rpms is closest to what you had on 35s?
