We may have to wait until 2013:

    http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2011/0...-for-north-america-under-way-sources-say.html

Here's a quote from the article:
"A heavily refreshed Tacoma is expected to debut for 2013 with all-new sheetmetal and at least one new engine, though its platform will likely be mostly carry over."

I would like to know what the new engine would be. I can only image the updated 4.0 with dual VVT-I. That's not really a "new" engine in my opinion.
Perhaps there would be a different/replacement for the 2.7 I4?

    Thoughts?

I just shook my magic 8 ball and it says "Chances are likely" on the 4.0 VVT-I in a redesign 2013.

If they are waiting until 2013 then I am even more confident that it will be a completely new engine. Remember the article stating that toyota will have turbo/DI in 11 new models by or around 2012? Although the new 4.0 is nice (I drive a new 4runner alot) Ford is ahead of the game with thier 3.7 and 3.5 ecoboost. Toyota is due for an engine that will be able to compete with the next gen engines coming out.

    Good Point!

I remember the article, and I would certainly like a smaller displacement V6 that's direct injection (Better fuel efficiency) with similar performance to the 4.0. A 6sp auto is definitely in order as well IMO.

The turbo I’m not that excited about yet, long term reliability would still be my concern. Very curious as to how the EcoBoost F150 fares with customers and problems.

    Also...

If they are waiting until 2013 for the 3rd gen. Tacoma, I’m really miffed as to why the Tacoma hasn’t received the updated 4.0. The 4Runner received the dual VVT-I 4.0 with the new generation in 2010. The FJ Cruiser received the same engine for the 2010 model year in the middle of a design cycle. The 2011 Tundra also has the update 4.0 in the middle of its design cycle.

So why no dual VVT-I 4.0 for the Tacoma yet, it doesn’t make sense.

    The Frontier doesn't have a V8 option only an I4 or V6.

I'm sure a V8 is out of the question for the Tacoma. Toyota doesn't even offer a V8 in the 4Runner any more.

The Tacoma is always a couple years off from getting the new engines. The 3.4 was in the 4Runner way before the Tacoma came around with it.

I'm sorry but that is not true regarding the 3.4 V6.

The 3.4 liter V6 was in the first 4Runner for model year 1996. However the 1st gen Tacoma came with the 3.4 liter V6 which was model year 1995.5 (The first half of the model year was still the Toyota "pickup")

The 4.0 with single VVT-i was in the 4Runner in model year 2003, and it made it into the 2nd gen Tacoma for model year 2005.

Your right. It was in the Land Criuser Prado before the Tacoma.

    Nope, still wrong.

The 3.4 was in the Land Cruiser Prado for the first time for model year 1996.

Also, 3.4L also was never in the Land Cruiser for the U.S (non Prado).
