Would you guys seriously be "beta testers" for a newly designed engine? I think I would wait a few years when the TSBs start thinning out. It cannot be evident where the issues will be until after thousands are in use in a variety of ways and environments. Especially when there are newly designed electronics. New engine designs are like first model years. Never buy year one.

I would not want to be the beta tester.

I'm pretty sure, whether the heavy redesign is 2012, 2013, or 2014, that it WILL have the 4.0 Dual VVT-i out of the new 4runner/FJ Cruiser/Tundra.
I'm assuming the same transmission options e.g. 5 speed auto or 6 speed manual.

But what I'm really looking for is a redesigned 4 cylinder. They have the technology in their engine fleet right now (e.g. dual variable valve timing, plus a few other small upgrades) to give the 2.7 4 cylinder a noticeable power increase. Right now it's sitting at 159 HP/180 ft-lbs of torque. I'm thinking if Toyota wanted to, they could get this thing up to 170-180 HP and 190-200 ft-lbs of torque. Sure not huge in the grand scheme of things, but if they gave it the same transmission options as the V6 (5 speed auto/6 speed manual) and gave it good rear end gearing (4.10-4.30), plus this technology which will dramatically increase the percentage of peak torque accross the power & torque band, this thing would be respectable in the power department and exceptional in the fuel economy/efficiency department. A few mods like headers, a mandrel bent exhaust and an intake would make it even more respectable. If they decided to maybe squeeze direct injection into this 4 banger, they could probably bet even more out of it, stock.

Also, if they CAN make a 4 cylinder engine like this, which I'm sure they can, spread it into more vehicles in their line up. Put it in all cab/bed configurations 4x4 or 4x2. Also, offer a regular cab/long bed option that is on the same chassis as say the Access Cab/Long bed for an even longer bed. They could give it a 7-8' foot bed with a regular cab and a decent 4 banger as above, you could have a great work truck option for many who don't want or need full size, or want the mileage penalty of the V6 or V8 engines.

Keep in mind I drive a TRD Sport Double Cab Long Box 4x4 V6. While I love the power of my V6 4x4, and the utility of the truck in general (I can do a lot with this truck with my family, camping/fishing/towing) I'd sacrifice some of the power for the efficiency/mileage of a peppier 2.7 4 banger as described above.

It makes total sense if you move factories and try to stretch out the 2nd Gen design as long as possible to recoup moving expenses. My guess is that a complete redesign ain't happenin' for 2012, but to string us along they will make some marginal changes like they did in 2009. Possibly adding things like the dual VVTI engine and another new grill. Had they used the dual VVTI for 2010 or 2011, they would have no other significant changes to make to keep the 7 year old design fresh.

my 2 cents, but I'm still hopeful for 3rd gen come September. :D

    @ Scott K

I agree that the 4 cylinder is in desperate need of an update. However I believe both the V6 and I4 should be mated to 6sp autos. If Toyota could design a 6sp auto that both engines could utilize it would help with development and production costs due to the higher volume.

The only reason I think it needs more power and 2 more gears is for fuel economy.

Wow you read my mind, ...not a chance. I wasn't going to compare the 4cyl. Tacoma to the EcoBoost F150.

What I will compare is that the 4runner with the 4.0 V6 Dual VVT-I 4x4 (17,22) is rated almost the same mpg as the 4 cylinder, 4x4 Tacoma with auto transmission (18,21).

Does the 4 cyl. Tacoma still sound fuel thrifty to you???

The kicker is 4x4 4Runner is 700lb+ (depending on model) heavier than the 4x4 4cyl. Tacoma.

I suppose your going to say I shouldn't compare the 4Runner and Tacoma?

    ???

    You're running in circles.

First the 4 cylinder is "pulling great MPGs as is", to now the 4 banger is in a heavy brick so what should I expect?

I understand that not everyone can afford the V6.

It seems people just assume the 4 cylinder model will get better fuel economy. Based on the fact that the 4cylinder doesn’t really have a mpg advantage over the V6 Dual VVT-I it proves that there is room for improvement. My hope is that Toyota looks at Dual VVT-I, perhaps direct injection and a 6sp auto to improve the 4cylinder’s mpg.

One last thing, if you don’t like the thread don’t participate. It’s quite simple.

You may think dual clutch transmissions and ecoboost engines are ridiculous, however Toyota already announced that they will be moving to direct injection and turbos.

    Here's the article:
    http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20101122/OEM06/311229972/1117

If the link doesn't work just search www.autonews.com for "Toyota eyes turbos, direct injection"

What else do you have for me?

ECO boost FTW. Ford is pulling ahead..that is for sure. 6 speed auto tranny.

Bottom line better MPG or people are going to move on YOTA

If I wanted a Ford, I would buy Ford. However I like Toyota for their dependability which is why every vehicle I have ever owned has been Toyota. They are just falling behind in technology which is frustrating.

Let me ask you this, do you think a manual transmission is durable? A good fit for a truck?

Oh, and I never praised the dual clutch in the Fiesta. You complained about cost, and I stated that Ford for example is offering dual clutch transmissions in entry level vehicles. If Ford can offer dual clutch transmissions in their entry level vehicles certainly Toyota could offer one in a Tacoma.

You're getting confused, and messing up your facts.
