The 3.0L in-line 6 cyl would be a huge win for the Tacoma

    Why would a 3L 6 be good?

In-line 6 engines have a history of outstanding reliability and smoothness. Strong low end torque. The potential to be an outstanding truck engine vs. a V6 high rev Camry / minivan engine that we have had to live with since 2016 in the Tacoma.

Would be very cool - not a whole lot of manufacturers in the US still making them though...think the only one that comes to mind is Mazda, but even then it is still turbocharged. Doubt they could make it as fuel-efficient as it would need to be though.

A 3L 6 wont have the torque that a 3.5 v6 does. More displacement means more torque. I would not take it over our engine. But maybe you found one that does. Lets see the specs. Now if you had said the latest 4runner 4 liter engine I would agree

If Toyota goes to a turbocharged 4banger I’d expect that we would see power and mpg ratings higher than what we have now on the v6 but I for one don’t trust that a turbo will be reliable enough to go 150K+ miles without issues. I’m 65 now so I’ll probably keep my Gen 3 another 10 years and then switch to a electric golf cart.

Yeah, cool they are bringing it back. Time will tell if it will be reliable.

I would say the tacoma is going to follow what is happening with the tundra.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra's hybrid powertrain is a $3400 option on the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition models
. The TRD Pro model (starting at $68,500) and the new top-of-the-line Capstone, which starts at $75,225, are both hybrid only.

I'm guessing the MSRP for the next gen tacoma trd pro is going to spike like 10k.

I dig. All that blue screams hybrid to me though and I'm not convinced about the long-term reliability. Who knows, maybe I'll be proven wrong. Secretly hoping the 22 TRD PRO Tundra has even a shred of Toyota's reliability.

Id be happy with the engine that will be going in the new gx460. But that will never happen.

It wont be reliable that's the issue. Jeeps are bad with naturally aspirated engines, you add twin turbos to the mix and it will be a total disaster. Fiat is not known for their engine quality.

But still people have to bring it up in here that an unreliable fiat with lots of power is a monumental achievement:rofl:

Kinda like a smaller displacement engine making more torque than a bigger one

I had a 4 cylinder Turbo with a 48V mild hybrid system, Belt starter Generator Wrangler for a few years. Not one issue and took it off road quite a bit. Was very quick, good on gas but sounded very bad, like a vacuum.

I think most people buying these things new don't care much about what's gonna happen to them in 8-10 years. Are they as long lasting and dependable as a Tacoma/4runner? No, but they aren't as bad as people make them out to be.

Have owned Toyotas for the last 30 years, think the reliability thing is mostly hype, while I love my Toyotas…also have a very long list of repairs to keep them going. Had my 1st Gen for 20 years, don’t think I am going to do that with my 3rd Gen as I am not getting any younger. Believe I am on the 100K miles plan now. Run it up to that then trade it in on something new.

Maybe a 4th gen forum should be opened for all this crap.
