    I did the same. Was able to pull it out and re-snap it.

    But I almost went to the point of writing to them and asking for new ones.

    It's better to slide a pin to spread the clip then put it on the ball and remove the pin.

    Thought I would add a tip I hadn't see posted yet.
    After drilling all the holes through the sheet metal I wanted to add some paint. Instead of masking off the area and trying to spray into the drilled holes I used a paintbrush. Just sprayed some Rustoleum on a plastic bag and brushed into the holes.
