I have a couple of threads going with other questions...this one is for headliner...
Just bought an 07 extended cab....the guy that I bought it from replaced the carpet...and put new Clazzio seat covers in it which are really nice....the previous owner from 2 years prior (and the original owner) smoked....you can still smell the faint smell of smoke...which I can't stand...
So I am switching out the seats with the seats from my 2006 Double cab...it already has new carpet....so the only thing I figure left after that is the headliner...
I figured I would remove the headliner but have never done it...when looking on line for replacements, it seems that buying the whole headliner unit is very expensive!!
    1. How is this normally done? Do you remove the headliner unit and then remove the material from that and glue on new material? If so could the smoke smell still be in the headliner shell?
    2. I figure may as well soundproof at that point, so what is the best material to use?
    3. Can a whole gray headliner replacement unit be bought somewhere reasonably?

I’ve replaced the headliner once in a former regular cab truck. You basically remove the entire headliner out carefully not to crease or dent it. Place it on a supporting surface and peel off the material. Then using a scraper, remove the foam backing. Light sanding where needed to make it smooth. Next use commercial 3M spray contact cement and spray both the headliner and material back. Lay strips on the headliner to keep the material off of it while carefully placing it down. Smooth with a small plastic J roller. You only get one shot with the contact cement. Any wrinkles are there to stay or you have to redo the entire process. I bought my material on EBay quite a few years ago. There’s videos on YouTube covering the process.

you can also look at your local salvage yards for a pickup and go there and smell the headliner. may not be worth your time. another option is to rent a clothing steamer and put a few tablespoons of odoban in there and steam the headliner. it might work with an auto carpet shampoo machine as well.

Thanks!! Do you recommend a good sound deadening material I can order for the roof since I would have the liner off?

i personally do not because i have not done it. if you search the forums for dynamat/killmat there are some good threads on it. and if you search the audio threads those guys usually tend to install sound deadener.

Just a thought but did you change out the cabin air filter?

I would try less invasive methods first.
There are sprays you can put on the cabin filter. Cabin filter can be replaced.
A chemical treatment that can be run through the A/C vents for cleaning purposes.
It never hurts to do an interior detail. Besides cleaning dirt off the door panels, dash, etc. you may also be cleaning smoke residue. Plus it will look better.
That will help you try and isolate if it's in the seats and/or headliner.
Other stuff is said to help. Like leaving parked overnight with baking soda on a paper towel on the seats. Or vinegar in a bowl. To absorb smell from the air.

One of the first things I did to my 07 was pulled the seats, carpet, door panels and the headliner and added sound deadener.
Quite a few products out there, I went with these from B Quiet.

No matter which product or company you go with, I highly recommend adding it, even if it's only to the roof of your truck.
