Used to own Serene Aquatics. I was on reef frontiers forum, same user name. Lost business when gas went 4 dollars a gallon, broke up with fiancee, house burned, and 3 biggest accounts left right after. It was a bad year.
Oh and ex fiancee thru a tea glass and hit my reef tank, it drained in the floor while I walked up the road to call the police. I have never hit a woman, but man I wanted to. She told them I did, but they saw she was lying. Dodged a bullet there. She was so sweet, untill she got mad and just lost it.

    Who knows.

In the process of moving into my new place. Picked up a 40 Breeder and a 20L at Petco. Going to use the 20 as a sump. I’ve had both freshwater and reef tanks before but I’ve been out of the hobby for 10 years now.

Had a great, growing, thriving reef for 5 years. Last 5 years have been a struggle with hair algae that killed all my corals. Now just have some fish and crabs left. At one point I took out all my rocks and scrubbed them. Weird thing is all my parameters are where they're supposed to be. Right now I'm blaming my home depot RO system. Broke down and bought an aquatic life 4 stager that I'm hoping fixes the problem. Also have a 135g fresh community tank that gives me no problems. A few reef shots from a couple years ago when things were good. I have the lights set up for sunrise/sunset. This was one of them-

if you have hair algae, you have excess nutrients. if the parameters are really high then i can throw off your no3 and po4 readings.

One of the coolest things I ever saw, I thought was crazy till I tried it.
Chateomorpha algae. Use a cheap yellow led flood light on 24 hours a day in a chateo refugium under your tank. It pulls tremendous amounts of nutrients out, it just grows like kudzu. Every few days at first, just grab a big wad and toss it in the trash.

Also have you tried the pure grain ethanol on filter floss method of nutrient removal?

It grows a slime in just a few hours that you can throw away as well.

I have been out for almost 20 years so there are probably much better ways now, but those to worked for me when someone called with a nutrient overload problem.

My fish guy was telling my to trim my chaeto for the same reason. Might as well try. I've tried everything else.

yeah chaeto needs to be trimmed and it’s best if you have it tumbling slightly.
