I have been fishing my entire life and love it, but what is the reason for the reverse switch on spinning reels?
I never use it and the only purpose it has is it will slip as the reel wears or I accidently hit it when fighting a fish.
I bought a Penn Battle 4000 last year and realized it has no reverse...GENIOUS!!!

i guess you could use it to play a fish or maybe they carried over from reels that have fixed spools. dunno. i switched to casting reels. hahahaaaa.

although if you are trying to follow the contour of the bottom like bucktailing for fluke. maybe you need to pay line out, that way instead of flipping the bail, other than that, thats all i got!

Its handy for staying in contact with the bottom when boondogging or backbouncing and for extending a drift, spinner, or float presentation.

I find it a useless liability too. I do a fair amount of jigging. I find casting and conventional reels to be better for jigging but use spinners quite a bit for it too. When using a spinner for jigging, I keep the bail open and the line on my finger.

I'm talking mostly about ice fishing. I like a reel to have reverse but then again I don't jig with spinning reels, I use inlines which all have reverse by nature.

Been fishing seriously now for 25 years... Jigging, ice, drifting, rivers, lakes, and every mud puddle that looked promising. I can honestly say I've never hit the switch

completely agree, its something else to go wrong and lose your fish.

it might have some "token" use in 3% of situations but in no way worth the risk of being triggered by mistake at the wrong time and in the middle of fighting a fish you lose it trying to reset the damn thing and you cant let go because of it to grab the net.

for the rare situations where you need to let out a little more line is easy enough done by pulling the line out by hand or in the case of spinning reels I just twist the spool as needed
