I have a new-to-me 2014 Taco with a TRD Sports Grill. As you can see in the image below, the clear coat has flaked off considerably; apparently this is a common issue with these specific grills.

However, I do love the look of this grill and would like to repair the finish if possible. My thoughts are:
    1. Remove the grill.
    2. Gently scrape or sand down places where the clearcoat is still flaking.
    3. Apply clearcoat and re-install the grill.
Is this an effective approach? Can I make a refinishing last? Would I be wasting my time? I've never tried to fix clearcoat on a plastic/carbon surface before. Thanks!

    That's tough.

I personally would sand as much as possible with the full intention of repainting the entire thing, and then clear coat on top of that.

Thanks @Rock Lobster. Yeah, I'd rather just find a new identical replacement grill, though of course that could flake too. It just looks really sharp on my rig :)
