your wasting money on synthetic atthis point, as long as u change ur oil every 5k miles or so, you don't need to worry about it.

That's both an opinion and a judgement call. It is WELL proven that synths have longer service intervals, meaning less oil changes. Considering the hellatious location of the 1st gen Taco's oil filter, that's a good thing. Second, synth oil is NOT based out of dino oil, so less oil consumed. If I sound like a fanboy, so be it. I basically change my vehicles oil once a year. Have been doing this for years and I keep my vehicles 5-7 years on average...

Just switched my 12 at 5000 miles to syn... and she'll stay that way.. i also use castrol edge in 98 t100 for the past 70K miles. i had a motor mount break and put a pin hole in my oil filter, didnt notice it (no smoke, steam, smell, nothing) then as soon as i heard the valves start ticking it just died. changed the filter, and inspected what oil was remaing, filled her up with fresh oil. like it never happened. i believe edge saved my motor.

I bought a Tacoma last July with a four cyl. 5 speed. I watched the dip-stick close and it didn't seem to be using any oil. For an engine with just over 210,000 on it I was really pleased.

I read a lot of stuff on synthetic oils. Some of it obvious B. S. I think there are people out there who are just making up bad articles to keep people from using certain products, such as synthetic oils, different brands of oil, etc. I've found posts on different sites that are worded different but sound like the same person and claims I don't believe.

Could it be that competitors and disgruntled people are dissing others products for their own ends? Sounds like a paranoid conspiracy doesn't it.

Anyway back to the oil. I read an article that said some of the earlier synthetics ate up some oil seals. The problem was corrected quickly (as you would expect) and it said all synthetics are safe for all seals since synthetic oils early years. It also said that synthetics will eat out the gunk around the oil seals and the gunk can be packed in there and keep oil from leaking. When the gunk is gone the oil leaks show up but getting the gunk away from the oil seal also lets the new oil get to it and reconditions the seal and make it work correct again.

It appears that's what happened to my engine. I filled it with Amsoil (a true synthetic) on Sept 1st. After 3 months on the synthetic I was down a quart. For the last two months it has stayed at the same level. The first couple months the oil stayed clean looking and now is somewhat dark but not as bad as I would of thought.

Some people recommend running synthetic for a short time on the first oil change to get rid of the gunk and follow the manufacturers recommendation for the second change on. Amsoil has an oil flush which I opted not to use and I think things have worked out fine.

From the reading I've done I think that the Napa Platnium Filter is one of the best and a filter of this type may be a smart move for extended oil changes. After this next oil change I will keep using Amsoil and change it once a year, with a premium filter change ever 6 months.

I've got a 99 I just rebuilt the motor I'm still running the break in oil in it. My question is I want to run Amsoil in it do I need to run a blend first or can I just go full synthetic?

Been turning wrenches for about 25 years . Don't waste your money on synthetic oil. If you change your oil at the regular maintenance schedule you will be fine. I do anywhere from 10 to 20 oil samples a month on customers engines some on synthetic some on Dino I have seen no difference or benefits from synthetic. Now if your car like my wives Volvo came with synthetic then by all means continue with it. But 1st gen Tacoma's came with dino oil. Just change your oil when it should be done and you will be fine. But what do I know I just work on engines. I am sure there will be someone that says I am wrong. Most likely someone that works in sales or an office pushing paper. I only service repair and rebuild engines for a living......
