I'm headed for a regear and I am looking for input on whats best for me. I am currently on 35s with a 3" lift. 4:88 or 5:29 its a daily with every weekend spent trail riding and crawling. Front and rear bumper along with sliders not sure if the weight plays a roll in decision. Automatic Transmission, thank you.

4.88 if it’s a AT or 4.56 MT. Does not the same issue as a 3rd gen.
i have a AT w/ 4.56 315’a and heavy as hell and wish I had 4.88 but did 4.56 when I had 285’s and it was perfect. if you want more offroad less highway go 4.88/5.29 but you’ll be screaming on the freeway.

Also weight def does. If I knew how heavy my truck was I would have gone 4.88 for sure. I doubt 5.29. Your truck does not look heavy.

Just know your auto. with 5.29 will be appx. the same as MT with 4.88. I could never figure why Toyota uses the same ratio for both. My Taco, 2.7, 4X4, auto., came with 4.10, but to be equal to the same Taco with a MT, it should have came with 4.56. Most my driving is 60 mph. I've learned to drive in 3 instead of D & my little 2.7 does a lot better & fuel mileage is slightly up a little. When on interstate D works fine.

You still need to add if you're AT or MT if you want this poll to be valid :boink:

For some reason I'm unable to change the poll but I edited the title ect. Id assume I'd have to erase and post again. I can just take it down if you'd like. I did try.

I'm an AT on 35s and a lot of weight, probably a little lighter than @nudavinci64 though with no RTT or swing out, but I got steel bumpers, sliders, bamf hangers, all steel skids (BAMF trio, LCAs, and rear diff, plus Pelfrey gas tank), etc.... I'm on 35s and it is my daily. I'm happy with 4.88s day to day. Of course, when wheeling, 5.29s would be nice, but it is my daily and a not trail only truck. As he pointed out you seem lighter, and even if you plan on adding weight, you stated it is your daily. Especially if you commute, don't stay only in town, and your wheeling spots are not necessarily close, I'd probably go 4.88s over 5.29 if I were you. Most people (2nd gens) I know went 4.88s on 35s with AT.

This is what I wanted to hear, im adding a front locker while I have the chance. 4:88 also seems like a happy medium to me. My front and rear bumpers are in powder now and of course under armor will follow shortly. Appreciate the response.

    What bumpers you get?

You offroad with elocker in rear already?

I'm sure you already know this, and now is the time to get that locker in from a money standpoint, but if not ... be careful to keep those tires straight when locked up front. It can fuck up your IFS if not and lead to trail repairs (replace CV etc) or fuck up your front more significantly.

I seriously considered adding a front locker when I regeared. I decided not too because I knew I'd blow some shit up as I am not experienced enough yet and itd be at a remote site. Seen budies break shit. I was taught to learn open-open and two pedaling, then open-locked, and finally locked-locked. I'm currently gaining my hours open-locked and got a winch if needed to get past obstacles the rear locker is not enough alone for. For all I know you got 10x the wheeling experience than I do, so ignore me. If not, pointing that out about the front locker as an FYI. One day, years down the line, I'll add one in the front. Figured I'd bring this up on the off chance you were unaware.

Based on that you may be pretty damn close. I would guess 6k+ I have all the BAMF stuff which I think is what generates most of the weight. Shell and swingout seem to be the main differences. Def curious to see what you come in at Download the cat scale app and find spot. =)

But agree with you. If I knew I was going to go up to the 35's range I would have done 4.88 hands down but at 285/33's 4.56 is a good play. If you even remotely think you will be going bigger then go for 4.88. 5.29 would be a weekend crawl rig then a daily on the 2nd gens in any version (unless you running 37+). My rec/vote is still 4.88 based on your setup (even 4.56 would not be bad since you are not armored up and would be closer to stock gearing.

ah missed this. I would still say 4.88 is the choice but you will start to notice a difference when the armor packs on. That stuff adds up quick. You doing a regular bumper or a swingout setup?

Thats why I'm here to learn as much as I can. I chose the relentless high clearance rear and the stealth front. I currently have a smittybuilt 10k with the hidden winch mount. Definitely will be very cautious with the front.

I need to do this. I've tried driving through the scales and couldn't figure it out. I'll download the app and go from there. Thanks for that.

Oh yeah, shell, not RTT. I dig your build alot, but hard to keep track of everyone on here. Yup, bamf beef. I got my skids off right now to do some maintenance and my truck definitely picks up a lot faster now. Definitely noticeable to me accelerating.

@Gen2 you can use the quote option at the bottom right of each post to quote. Helps track the conversation better. Welcome to TW by the way. Obvious you got the same passion a lot of us have.
