I had 4.56 on my 14 dcsb. It was perfect as a dd with 285/75/17s. They measured out a little under 34 inches.
My new project, a s/c ‘12 got a set of 4.88/ this past week and I’m waiting on a set of 35s. I’ll let you know how they compare when I get them on. Probably early-mid April.

Hey guys I have a huge delima I have replaced my suspension with ome HD added the arb bull bar bumper and jba off road uca's I want to regear but not sure if I should go for 4.56 or 4.88 leaning towards the 4.88 due to being in Colorado I do lots of climbing and I'm thinking the extra torque will be super nice to have. I'll be adding a brute Force Fab HC rear bumper with spare tire carrier. Do you think 4.88 is the way to go here? I was also wanting to keep my locker in the rear I have a 2010 trd pro automatic with 176,000 miles & I plan on keeping the tires at 265/70's

4.56 would be my choice for your setup.

Unless you don't do much highway driving, 488 will be too much. 430 or 456 will be the way to go with your stock size tires.

I got my 4.88 gears installed with a rear Locker. The new gears definitely feel better thanks for your recommendation. I think what I like the most is that I put a rear Locker in. I really enjoy off-roading but this upgrade has really opened up a number of steeper trails that I just couldn't make it up or struggled with.

Why are you considering a regear? Are you having issues now? It doesn't seem like you have very much extra weight, added wind resistance or bigger tires. I feel like these are the key factors to consider with a regear.

Hi all! Not many 4.30 gear threads, so I thought I'd take my chances with a question here...
    2009 6speed manual.
I just went from the stock 3.73s to 4.30s.
    285/70/17s
    2nd gen 6th gear is .849
    3rd gen 6th gear is .713

    100kph(62mph) with 3.73s in 6th is 2050rpm
    100kph(62mph) with 4.30 in 6th is 2400rpm

    My question is;
does anyone know if one can swap the .713 gear from a 3rd gen into a second gen?
I've talked to Toyota and they can't answer the question. I'm looking to get whatever pertinent information about thickness/diameter/whatever is relevant to this to be able to help a gear shop figure out if this is possible. Supposedly, the transmission doesn't even need to be dropped, just the transfer case; supposedly.
Anyone know the answers about this? Or, can anyone put me in to right direction?
I'd like to get my rpms down a bit for the highway.
    Cheers from Canada!!:canada:

Based off of conversations I had with ECGS about setups, 4.88's would be my opinion. This is based off you have an automatic (only 5 gears for the 2010), the overall weight of your truck (all that armor adds up quickly), and that you live in CO. I have a similar setup (other than MT and S/C) and live in CO; but because I have the 6th gear, I went with 4.56 and couldn't be happier. But then again, I have 35's and if you are truly honest with yourself and REALLY think you'll stay at 265s o_O, then 4.56 may be better.

I will offer two things: 1) A LOT of people have said they're going to stay at a closer to OEM size tire, only to change their minds as soon as the mod bug hits them (and it sounds like you're already infected). Now, this isn't necessarily a big deal unless you spend a butt load of money on re-gearing only to regret your choice later on down the road. So really the question you should be asking yourself is "Do I plan for what I have now, or for something unknown in the future?" That's a bit of a tough question to answer, and only you can answer it. Anyhoo, I would be happy to talk/ show you my setup sometime if you want if you find yourself in the Colorado Springs area. Being able to see and feel the difference really helped me out with my decision. Which brings me to, 2) Call ECGS (or Nitro) and talk with one of their reps about your use and setup. They are obviously very knowledgeable about these things and can offer you some good insights; and they never seem to get tired of answering the same questions over and over again, lol. Good luck, and PM me if you want to check out my setup for comparison. cheers.

Did you get this done yet? If so, share your thoughts. I'd be curious if you ended up doing the locker too. I debated hard on it but in the end, I pulled the trigger on a front air locker (already have the rear locker). It was damn expensive but i'm glad I did it. I've been in a couple of sticky situations where my rear locker wasn't helping and wished that I had a front locker too, so in the end having piece of mind is worth it to me.

EDIT: Nevermind. I'm an idiot and didn't see that you posted that you did get it installed. I even 'liked' the post.....

If you are heavy and bigger than 285's def go 4.88. The truck scoots good but now has an S/C but it still feels a bit laggy compared to having 285's and 4.56. I have 315's and 4.56.

also just to note for bigger tires the bigger enemy is going to be the size of the axle. Heavy Truck, 4.56, small axle, and S/C. My rear said goog bye and likely will happen again.

Curious on the MPG you guys with 4.88 and 4.56 are getting on 315s 35s

I did a 500+ mile trip (Houston-austin-San Antonio) some hill country driving on stock gears and 315s.. I averaged about 15 mpg. Rolling at about 70mph

on the first fill up was at 16.6. Highway pretty flat. About 260-270 miles a tank. And I’m not driving like us typical Texans, full throttle..

Is your truck built up or fairly stock form (no armor, winch etc).

On a good and conservative day on a trip, I was lucky to get 13.8 but avg is 11-12 mpg on 4.56, 315 but my truck is super heavy and supercharged. 14-15 mpg seems reasonable on conversation driving.

When i went from 285 - 315 I felt it did not make much of a difference but may be 1 mpg loss. If your AT and running 315/35 I would go 4.88. I added 4.56 on 285's which was perfect.

With 33's you will definitely regret getting 5.29 gears. If my truck had 35's I'd regret 5.29 gears. My truck has 37's, it tows a lot, and I wouldn't want any gear lower (higher numerically) than 5.29. 70 mph is 2500 RPM with an automatic transmission in my truck.

So 2nd gens with auto, and 4:88's running dirty 5's, how's the tranny act while hitting the hills?? Is it still searching, or is the ever vulnerable gear searching gone?? I wanna do 4:88's and dirty 5's on my daily. I also run a 1" body lift in case I go dirty 7's, with front and rear bumpers. A poor man's bed cage rides in the bed. I'm gonna assume this is a good set up for what I have??
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions in advance..

So far so good. Leaning to 4:88's, but now if I tow 3-4 times a week?? How's towing with said gearing?? Will it be screaming, or will she ride right at home. I basically tow tandem waverunners in the hills of Canyon Lake. Still 4:88 or 4:56?? This will be the deciding factor to whichb gearing I'll run. THANKS SO MUCH to this point, and every other question. Appreciate all the input....
